Martin Carthy book?

Years ago I read that Nick Kent was about to publish a two part book on the folk revival and Martin Carthy's role in it. It was to be called Prince Heathen. Has it been shelved or is it still a work in progress? Hopefully it's the latter. Thanks in advance for any help.

Apologies, I think the authors name is Ken Hunt.

It ought to be Martin Carthy writing it.

Didn't the publisher go under or something? I seem to recall reading or hearing it was done but there were legal issues arising from the bankruptcy.

I'd almost forgotten about this! It was mentioned in the booklet for Martin's "Carthy Chronicles" box set from 2001 and publication of the first part was then imminent. I've heard nothing about bankruptcy or related legal issues but as nothing has appeared in the subsequent 13 years something drastic has clearly happened to cease or delay publication.

Thanks Martin Farrell for the reminder - I'm going to make some enquiries and see what I can find out.

Not quite what you are looking for but a book that is due for publication in March this year deals with the history of British Folk Clubs. It includes contributions from many who were on the scene from the beginning including Martin Carthy. It should be of interest to many Mudcat followers this side of the Atlantic.

Hoot

Perhaps Martin should get someone to ghost write it for him. then he wouldn't have to stop playing - and lets face it - he enjoys playing, so that's obviously what to do while the force is with him.

He always does a good interview - an entire book would be good. I'd buy it.

It ain't over 'til it's over!

Author Ken Hunt has a Twitter account now, and
the very latest I could find about his work
is in his Tweets.

I believe the posts I am quoting are January of ... this year? 2021?
Could be mistaken about that.

"Can confirm I'm writing second (much-gutted) draft of Martin Carthy's approved biography titled
Prince Heathen ...
There were some most splendiferous (!) developments in Year One of COVID ...
Prepare to be pleasantly enlightened with Prince Heathen's illuminations."

I have to go back deeper and earlier in Ken Hunt's Twitter Tweets
in order to find where he says he has been sitting down
with Martin Carthy and working hard at updating everything.
So before I do, I shall send this updating post to this thread.

Right. A little less than an hour later, here is:

5 May 2020 Tweet text from Ken Hunt,
in reply to an inquiry:
"... I'm deep into writing Prince Heathen, Martin Carthy's approved biography.
In February [2020] Martin and I hunkered down for a couple of days ... "

More later if I scare it up.

I read in the London Review of Books that there is a forthcoming book that Martin Carthy is co-authoring with the lawyer and folk revival activist Stephen Sedley. Titled 'Who Killed Cock Robin?' and due in July it focusses on British folksongs of crime and punishment.

Thanks for the heads up

Due out 12th July

Who killed Cock Robin?

Who Killed Cock Robin? by Stephen Sedley from Reaktion Books
Who Killed Cock Robin?
British Folk Songs of Crime and Punishment
Stephen Sedley, Martin Carthy

At the heart of traditional song rest the concerns of ordinary people – the folk. And folk throughout the centuries have found themselves entangled with the law: abiding by it, breaking it, and being caught and punished by it. Who Killed Cock Robin? is an anthology of just such songs compiled by one of Britain’s senior judges, Stephen Sedley, and most respected and best-loved folk singers, Martin Carthy.

The songs collected here are drawn from manuscripts, broadsides and oral tradition. They are grouped according to the various categories of crime and punishment, from Poaching to The Gallows. Each section contains a historical introduction, and every song is presented with a melody, its lyrics and an illuminating commentary that explores its origins and sources.

Together, they present a unique, sometimes comic, often tragic, and always colourful insight into the past, while preserving an important body of song for the pleasure and performance of future generations.

‘At the heart of the folk songs which have found a new popularity of late, rest the concerns of ordinary people who have found themselves entangled with the law . . . They are grouped according to various categories of crime and punishment, from Poaching to The Gallows; and accompanied by illuminating commentaries.’ — The Bookseller

‘At last, a simple, reader-friendly book on the cause-effect relationship between the CRIMES of the UPPER classes (documented in court and prison records, history books, the lives lost via law, scaffolds, transportation, et al) and the ‘crimes’ of the ‘lower’ classes (as documented in folk songs and ballads). The savagery of our toxic system of governance, the endless, pitiless theft of the property and rights of the public are kept in the public memory in the only unassailable form: the oral tradition. A trustworthy, authoritative, edifying and highly enjoyable read. Put it into school curricula.’ — Peggy Seeger, songwriter, performer and activist, author of 'First Time Ever'

‘A rich and rewarding journey through the law – and lore – of song and balladry. With such outstanding authors/compilers it’s no surprise whatsoever but their understanding, respect and regard for their source material mean that expertise and scholarship never swamp but only enhance and enlighten the reading experience. As well as opening my eyes to some previously unknown example of legal chicanery or barely believable repressive legislation and practice, every page made me want to sing these songs and ballads of the wronged and the ruthless, the cruel and cunning and the good, the bad - and the lovely. What a great delight of a book.’ — Willy Russell, playwright and composer, author of Educating Rita and Blood Brothers

I'm obviously missing something in the subtext here.
You may not be a fan of Martin's music.....but why would it be in the history of crime?
Which other songs will be taken into consideration when we enter the sentencing phase of the trial.

A spot of confusion to be cleared up here.

"Martin Carthy Book" can be taken to mean two things:

-- a book authored by someone else, concerning
Martin Carthy's life and career, and its significance to
the revival of traditional music in England.

-- a book on the subject of a specific category of traditional songs, and what the songs illustrate about their time and place,
co-authored by two authorities:
one an authority on the judicial system and
the other, Martin Carthy, an authority on traditional music.

So this thread is now going in two directions at once,
as these are two very different books.

For those who may not be aware,
Prince Heathen. the Ken Hunt biography of Martin Carthy,
has been delayed seriously because
of Ken Hunt being treated for cancer, including surgery.
He has written at his website that
in 2023, he could only read or write for 10 to 30 minutes per day
before he would need to rest.
Here's hoping Ken Hunt is recovering well and soon writing again.
