So, what is there there for folk music types this year? In particular what is there for folk music types that is not in the Crown and Anchor? And/or during the day? I note that the camping has risen in cost astronomically. |

Conversely I do notice that the Elephant appears to have nothing on the Sat nite. I've done a "pop-up" there before. Do you think it might be worth my taking a VERY small PA rig down and a few of us doing a mini-open-mic in there - with the Landlord's consent, of course? If I did that would you do a slot? |

Afternoons are singarounds in the garden, evenings are tunes sessions. Spot by 7 Champions. There are 12 morris teams on Saturday and 10 on Sunday dancing in the streets. We need people to support the ceilidh or we will lose it in the future. Camping is cheaper than bed and breakfast and you can fall out of the ceilidh into your tent. There is an acoustic stage down past the Sun which I believe will have some folk acts on and there are some folk bands on Shepherd Neame stage, Preston Street stage and Guildhall stage. With the exception of paying for camping and the £5 for the ceilidh this is a free festival so good value for money. There are usually some folk bands on at the Old Wine Vaults as well. |

You would get more attendees that way, methinks, and reduce dance miles. £25 a night is too much for the caravan and camping folk group, who have camped there in the past. I noticed they are camping elsewhere this year. I do hope that something folky continues at Faversham, as it started as a folk and ale wekend. We were too busy to volunteer last year, ( booked elsewhere); we had run the Bull sessions before, but popped over on the Sunday afternoon last year. Nothing happening at the Bull. The town had the feeling of a giant boot fair. I could not find any morris going on. I think that the non local sides had packed up early to go home. I later found that a number of local morris sides who had supported the event for more years than I like to remember had been snubbed. There was some ill feeling there. FloraG |

Doubtless it'd be possible to go for pop-up sessions, but don't expect to be listened to! Twas different when it was a smaller affair, and the Friday night folk club was a kingpin- now everywhere has the usual bands you can see every week.. and tha clearly is what the publicans want. You can't blame them for wanting to cash in, it's a tough trade. Having run official sessions over the years, I prefer now to mooch. By the way, Flora, Pip is about as local as you can get these days! He's washed off the Sussex dust for some Kentish malt... very sensible! |

I was just making the point that a local band would have a local following - so you would have a core of attendees. I don't know if Pips band has had time to collect a following yet in Faversham. I haven't seen him at the Folk club. A new committee took over last year. All credit to anyone who puts in time on a voluntary basis. I think they made a few mistakes - like not inviting the morris side we are attatched to. When our local rotary club asked if we could do our usual autumn barn dance on that day I felt less committed to volunteer for the afternoon sessions, and took the paid booking instead. There are some towns that welcome the music. Weve just returned from Whitby where lots of local organisations give over their building for a week. Many of the stewards were also local.
