Mac Music Software

I'm looking for software that will enable me to play tunes that i have downloaded from the internet. I would prefer that this be something that i can purchase separately as opposed to downloading it. I am willing to pay a reasonable fee. I use a Macintosh G3. Thanks.

Check out QuickTime 4.0. I'm not sure what all it can handle, but it's supposed to be a big step up from 3.0. John

I also use a G3, and I've found that you'll need more than one application. No one of them seem to play everything, especially when it comes to MP3's. QuickTime 4.0 is OK, but you're forced to download it, and then be on the net to do the install. With a 56K modem, downloads aren't to bad. I would suggest RealPlayer Plus G2 & SoundApp PPC at a minimum. Another small but good program is SoundMachine. Links to all of these should be found at . I've been thru' it all, so if you have a problem, feel free to e-mail me at bleudenim@yahoo.com. Be happy to go into more detail.

Can Quicktime do sheet music/score writing?

I have a Powerbook G3 and am primarily interested in being able to play the tune and generate the printed music and/or quickly/easily create a lyric sheet with chords.

I bought Band-In-A-Box about a year ago, before I got a computer powerful enough for it to be useful. I bought it for the other side of the music process, specifically for creating demo CD's with sampled sounds. Either I misplaced it or someone stole it, unopened, so I'm not sure whether it can do the printed music creation or not.

What I need for sheet music creation is, ideally, something that can generate music as complex as 4-part harmony with, say, piano accompaniment (e.g., for a choir). It does not have to be suitable for symphonic arrangements, since most of what I will be transcribing is folk music or other music that is relatively simple.

Several years ago, I used someone else's Quick Time music composition program on a PC, and it was OK. Is there a Mac version and does it work well (easy to use, etc.). I have also played around with Overture and have not gotten the hang of that yet (plus, they have been bought),

Advertisements are OK, but I am really seeking personal testimonials about what works or does not, what is or is not a good value, etc.

Genie

Be sure to ask Amos when he gets back in town-- maybe a PM to him on this would be good.

If you're playing MP3s then Apple's free iTunes software (available here is darned good.
For editing files and converting MP3s to WAV, AIF and other formats, I use Amadeus, a shareware programe written by a brilliant bloke called Martin Hairer (you can download an evaluation copy here
