Hey there! Daughter of a Mudcatter here. I'm a student at UNC-Wilmington and am looking to study abroad this coming spring at Swansea University in Wales. I know a lot about the program that I am looking into, but I don't know much about the area Around the university, like the actual town that it's in. I'm looking for some info on that, for anyone who knows about the university, and even anything about Wales in general. I know that it's an amazing country and that everyone who has done this program has absolutely loved it, but I would love some tips/information/advice from anyone who lives there or around. Thanks!!

I would jump on www.thestudentroom.co.uk - probably better advice than the best real ale pubs, etc, than we can give you.

There's a lot of information if you Google.

Swansea is on the South coast, there is a river and a castle.

It had the city centre blitzed in the war so there is very little that is old remaining in the city centre.

If you have ever read or heard any Dylan Thomas you will find familiar places such as Cwmdonkin Parc.

You're a student..

.. maybe you'd benefit by downloading all episodes of this short TV reality series set in Swansea,
if you are planning on living there for at least a few months?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p018vlpy/clips

This should get you up to speed on prevailing social cultural norms
for local '20-somethings'.

If that whets your appetite for the region,
further contextual sociological study material
can be found in both series of MTV's "The Valleys".

I'd be inclined to ask the Mods to alter the thread title to something more specific.
Like: "General Information About Swansea and Wales?"

Great Steampunk and Goth scene in Swansea. We often visit TheSilentOne's daughter who lives in Swansea and go to the music events Dead of Night puts on. Her hubbie is big on the LARP scene in Swansea too.

For after school fun, I'd check the Hanbury pub on Friday and Saturday evenings. It is where Ele and her friends often meet up prior to going on to planned events.

Gwilym Games is a friend and as a local studies librarian at City and County of Swansea has lots of historical knowledge of Swansea and surrounding area. He is on facebook if you want to friend him. I can hook you up.

Take warm clothes and a good blanket. If you are used to North Carolina, you will find Wales chilly and damp.

I once made the acquaintance of a man from South Wales, and he mentioned that in Wales people wear their coats "every day."

I picked him up at a Midwestern airport and warned him that he would want to remove his coat before we stepped outside. I knew it was a hot day, but I didn't realize that it was 107 outside. He said it was like walking into a wall.
