Wilsons&Sting Later with Jools Fri 20th

Sting will be singing songs from his first album in ten years, 'The Last Ship' on the Later with Jool's Holland Show this Friday 20th. He will be joined by the Wilson Family, some of my most favourite singers from the folk scene. We were in the Studio when it was pre-recorded on Tuesday evening and it sounded fabulous! looking forward to the rest of the album which is released later this month.

The Wilsons are my favourite singers and friends, too - we'll be tuning in to Later, as always!

The Northumbrian piper Katherine Tickell is often in his band too. Dont suppose I could see him for £8 though.

Anybody know where I can get recordings by the Wilsons? Somehow they escaped my notice here in the States. I checked them out on Youtube recently, and they are wonderful.

great to see these fine singers getting deserved recognition, i first met them at whitby in 1974, a group of us[including the wilsons] started an alternative singaround in the cutty sark, they are also fine singers individually as well as collectively. Dick Miles

It was on BBC2 on Tuesday night, I recorded it. Sting did two songs, Jimmy Nail was on one, but no sign of the Wilsons. Maybe it was a cut-down version of the show?

Yes - the Tuesday version (half an hour) is a taster for the much-longer Friday Later. To my mind, Sting is a very articulate rock musician who uses his love of folk music and his money to introduce the folk artists he has always known, for which he deserves the MBE. Look at Fields Of Gold, for example (and Black Seam); John K, Eva Cassidy and a plethora of well-known folk artists can't be wrong!

And another thing... Jools should be knighted!

...and it's a welcome return for Sting, who showcases tunes from his album The Last Ship, which is not only his first all-original compositions album in a decade but also the soundtrack to his play, due to open on Broadway in 2014.

Mike Wilson posted on facebook:

Now, you might want to take this with a HUGE pinch of salt....but, EVIDENTLY, we are on the Later With Jools Holland Show, tonight....BBC 2, 11.05pm, singing some nice gentle backing vocals to a couple of Sting's new songs....but, to be on the safe side, it might be best just to record it...then check it out in the morning and hopefully be pleasantly surprised!! ;-))

"nice gentle backing vocals"? That'd be a novelty!

They also appeared on the Letterman show and the Today show while they were over in New York performing with Sting at the Public Theater.

Both clips are on You-tube. Sting has never been a favourite of mine in the past, but this new c.d. "The Last Ship" sounds great.

Nothing but respect for the Wonderful Wilsons. Totally awesome singers and great people from the few short chats I've had with them at festivals. They are the essence of what folk muic is about IMHO. Sting seems to have found a very valuable new direction - good for him.

The hugely talented Wilson Family will be performing in their hometown of Billingham on the 2nd November at Billingham Catholic Club .
They have recently returned from New York where they have been starring with Sting and many others in a series of concerts promoting his new CD and play The Last Ship.
This will be the first gig the lads are playing on their return to the UK so take the chance to come along and catch all the gossip first hand.
Admission to this gig is free but a small cover charge {£1.00} is in place for non members.
Bound to be a great night, see you there

The address for the club is 37 Wolviston Road Billingham TS23 2RU . You can catch the No.36 bus from Hartlepool/ Middlesbrough, it stops right outside the club or the train station is a mere 15 min walk.

In the Letterman clip Sting and Nail are miming (badly especially Nail), but I suppose some would say it can be justified when it would be difficult to set up the PA for all the personnel and instruments for 3 or 4 minutes.
I could hardly understand the words - so what our friends State side made of it - I can't imagine.
Plenty of energy though .........

Thanks Betsy, I thought it was my hearing that was at fault. I also had trouble making out the words. Letterman could have had 'Skerne' for a lot less money and had a far better musical experience. Just my opinion.

Betsy, There is no mimimg going on. The youtube clip is (very) badly out of sync. But there was certainly not a backing track of any type whatsoever in sight or sound, all completely live. I can vouch for that, as happily...I was there!! :-)) Hope to see you soon, all the best to Faith and the Family. Cheers, Mike.

Hiya Mike, would I DARE to dispute you??????
We are ALL pleased for everything that is happening for you and the family, and I (We?) hope you get great recognition and pleasure with what has come to pass.
It must be a great buzz!!!
I accept what you say about the "thing" being out of sync. - I had thought Nail had forgotten the correct words at around 2 mins 35 secs – but you're right it is just badly out of sync. How the F**k does that happen on a big superstar show??
Anyway – onwards and upwards – love to all the lot of ya, and enjoy it all.
By the way – many moons ago - did you get rid of all those cassettes in Holland – might need to buy them back as they become collectors pieces with the new-found "status" .
That'll be right – C'mon Burra
