30 Sep 13 - 09:51 AM (#3562811) Subject: Lyr Add: THE BALLAD OF LIDL AND ALDI From: Noreen THE BALLAD OF LIDL AND ALDI (Mickey MacConnell) Well the wife she broke her ankle when she tumbled off the bike Leaving me to do the housework, a job I never liked And doing the weekly shopping seemed a dreadful chore to me 'Til I discovered LidldiAldi, LidldiAldi LidldiAldi Lidldidee. Now I just can't wait for Thursdays when the specials go on view I'm the first man to the trolleys; I'm the first man in the queue For now I know what women mean about retail therapy It's LidldiAldi, LidldiAldi LidldiAldi Lidldidee. Its angle grinders and black puddings and a pot of German jam A lump of heavy bacon and a wet suit from Japan And a pack of streaky rashers, a crate of Russian stout And a portable generator just in case the lights go out Alloy wheels and windscreen wipers and a bag of Rooster spuds An inflatable rubber dinghy to help survive the floods Spanners, sockets and fish fingers, they're so cheap they're damn near free At LidldiAldi, LidldiAldi, LidldiAldi, Lidldidee. Now there's welding rods and prime organic beef to make a hearty stew A hiking staff and spiky boots for climbing Kathmandu Big heads of curly cabbage to make you eat your fill Sledgehammers and bananas and a lovely cordless drill And there's hatchets and hamburgers and there's tins of beans and peas And a petrol driven chainsaw for cutting bits off trees Strimmers, sabres, saws and sausages, computers and TVs At LidldiAldi, LidldiAldi LidldiAldi Lidldidee. Now the wife has gone ballistic, marriage heading for the rocks With her crutches and her shopping bag now she's hobbling round the shops And she's cut up all me credit cards, I'm sad as sad can be No more Aldi LidldiAldi, no more Lidldidee for me. For the shed is full of plastic shit I didn't really want And the gardens full of furniture and the house is full of plants And I'm living in the doghouse; Rover, Fido, Shep and me Because of Aldi LidldiAldi LidldiAldi Lidldidee. So no more angle grinders nor black puddings, no more pots of German jam No lumps of heavy bacon, no more wet suits from Japan No packs of streaky rashers, and I'll have to do without Another portable generator just in case the lights go out No alloy wheels, no windscreen wipers, no bags of Rooster spuds No inflatable rubber dinghies to help survive the floods For I am living in the doghouse I'm as sad as sad can be, No more Aldi LidldiAldi, no more Lidldidee for me! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL7jyXCQ2Zc |

Well, shag it I had just spent precious time trying to type out the words from the video, when I saw Noreen's post with the lyrics. Thanks Noreen anyway - there were a few bits I couldn't make out and you solved the problem for me. Now what am I going to do with all the rubbish I've accumulated in the garage in the last few years since Lidl and Aldi arrived? |

02 Oct 13 - 06:43 PM (#3563749) Subject: RE: The ballad of Lidil and Aldi From: Penny S. That's brilliant. I spent too much this week on Christmas goodies and decorating materials! And duplicates of pie fillings that I already had stocks of. And Italian biscuits. To join the stash of Greek biscuits. And Swedish biscuits. I do have a rule that I won't buy anything that I won't need, but it's possible to draw that line an awfully long way out. Penny |

02 Oct 13 - 08:20 PM (#3563769) Subject: RE: The ballad of Lidil and Aldi From: GUEST,leeneia A wonderful song, Mickey. How I envy you your ability to write with rhythm and rhyme. As an American, I've been in Aldi stores, but I had never heard of Lidl. I think if Germans start supermarket chains named Lidl and Aldi, then they have only themselves to blame when an Irishman comes along and writes a chorus that goes lidl-dee-aldi. |

03 Oct 13 - 09:59 AM (#3563945) Subject: RE: The ballad of Lidil and Aldi From: GUEST,Eliza Loved this song. Sent it to my sister, who passed it on to her two daughters (all in Scotland) She was amazed at how Mickey remembers all the words so glibly. We have both Aldi and Lidl here in Norfolk. My neighbour calls it 'Lidl's for diddles' (meaning a rip-off) Only trouble with this song is, it stays in your head for days. I've been 'Lidl-dee-Aldi' ing all over the house, it gets the housework done cheerily. |

04 Oct 13 - 09:21 AM (#3564218) Subject: RE: The ballad of Lidil and Aldi From: GUEST,Eliza Mr Happy, I think they're brilliant, but I reckon my neighbour, like the song, has bought loads of daft stuff she didn't need, and blames the store, not herself! I've had some super things from there; they had a 'stationery' day and I got lovely decorative notebooks, sets of coloured pencils, folders and file-systems etc, all good for stocking fillers, and costing just pennies. Another time, a 'bedding' day, I got a sturdy pure cotton duvet cover made in Germany which has been much admired. I also like their vegetables at half the price of other supermarkets. As with any shop, you have to pick and choose. I'm STILL singing Lidl-dee-Aldi in my head, I'm not sure how to get rid of it! |
04 Oct 13 - 09:38 AM (#3564221) Subject: RE: The ballad of Lidil and Aldi From: Mr Happy Aldi's good too, but I like Lidl better - more exotic stuff - riding tack, fishing reels, assorted picture hooks, lovely food, the lis is endless! |
04 Oct 13 - 10:15 AM (#3564233) Subject: RE: The ballad of Lidil and Aldi From: GUEST,Grishka Funny song indeed. The topic as such is not new, but the "Irish" chorus is the real punchline. The two companies, and Germans generally, can feel flattered. According to Diogenes Laertius, Socrates used to exclaim at the market: "How many things exist that I can do without!" Anonymous variant: "There are so many cheap things, that you save a lot of money if you don't buy them!" |
04 Oct 13 - 05:48 PM (#3564331) Subject: RE: ADD: The Ballad of Lidil and Aldi (M. MacConnell) From: GUEST,Eliza I'm reminded a little of the old song "The Old Bazaar in Cairo" in which all sorts of daft items for sale are listed. I just adore cut-price stores like QD and Poundland, 99p Stores etc. If you don't have much spare cash, you can still have some Retail Therapy (as Micky sings) I can never resist plastic storage containers, cheap teatowels or scouring pads. Everybody loves a bargain! Do you think it's due to our hunter-gatherer origins? |

I found that while I was learning it, the tune that kept coming to mind was from "The Boys of the Lough" first album (Trailer LER 2089), "In Praise of John McGee", sung by Robin Morton. it fits like the proverbial glove. |
