Steeleye Span ~ packing up or not ??

Hiya,

I doubt they'll still be going by the end of this yr, due to age & any replacement not being Peter Knight. I know it's silly but I'm ♥broken.

They meant, & still mean, such a lot to me; they were the 1st band I took notice of; they helped me fall in love w/ life again; I love folklore, myths & legends, & got into the Craft cos of them. Such a shame esp. since they get better w/ age & their new cd is brilliant.

Feel sick.

Age? They're not so old. Look at the Stones. Look at Leonard Cohen. Granted Pete Seeger has slowed down, but he's 94. Don Rickles is still working, as is Tony Bennett.

I remember starting a review with the words "We will miss Steeleye Span" when they broke up in about 1976 or so. Peter Knight was missing from their lineup for years after Bob Johnson & Rick Kemp joined. Then they were going to break up. Then they weren't. Then they did. Then they didn't.

Cheer up, Claire. You never know. Shouldn't count too many chickens if I were you. All may still be well.

But OTOH...

All I heard was that Peter is leaving.... after the tour..... I don't think Steeleye is finishing :)

I hope they don't wind down, but even if they do, there'll probably be reunion concerts!

Just look at the line up over the years, Claire. You will see that Peter and others have come and gone with no affect at all on the general ethos. Besides, think about it, although they are very important to you, do they feed you? Do they clothe you? Keep you warm? No. In the overall scheme of things they do not affect your real life. OK, they make you happy. But they are not the only thing that does that. They will continue. You will still be happy. Hang in there!

Cheers

Perhaps they should do what the Albion Band - re-invent itself witha fresh young line up - tsicking to the same general sound and some of the rep. Certainly worked for the Albions.

Ok, name your "Young Steeleye"

Hiya,

See what you're saying Dave. The answer's clearly no to all 3. I think I'd find it v odd if they did.

Looking back, I thought I'd be in bits when MJ died, but I wasn't, cos my taste had long since changed; I thought I'd never get over a character "death", I did – he was never alive in the 1st place, :. he couldn't be dead. For some people, love of bands, footie teams etc. can replace what's missing in their lives, & *what should be* important, but isn't. I'm not sure my perspective ever got that skewed but I'm sure loved ones would disagree – luckily they'd be joking. [I hope....].

Just had an E Mail from Richard, who informs me Maddy was/is upbeat re: SS's future. Thanks, I don't feel as if I could *crack* up now......

if someone else is going to be Steeleye - can I be the Glen Miller Orchestra?

If Maddy's got any sense she'll let some of her brood loose, much like Blowzabella and Focus have. Never thought I'd get those three into one sentence and make sense, though.
She has been slowing down, though - no foreign tours and interspersing SS with CB every other year. It's not so easy, for one thing.

Not a chance, The A Train's cancelled along with everything else because of engineering works across the holidays. Explanations of the euphemism are most welcome.

Re M the GM comment "I remember starting a review with the words "We will miss Steeleye Span" when they broke up in about 1976 or so. Peter Knight was missing from their lineup for years after Bob Johnson & Rick Kemp joined".
Peter was only missing from the lineup during the John Kirkpatrick/Martin Carthy era which spanned 1977 to 1979. I think that you will find that he has been present in every other line-up before and since (except the first, short-lived Hark the Village Wait line-up.

Not sure you are right there, Guest. Are you sure he was there throughout the Bob Johnston/Rick Kemp period also? If I wasn't so idle I'd go downstairs from my upstairs study & check all the sleeves...

Maybe mañana...

No need, Michael. Check out Wiki
- I think it can be believed on this one. Peter only missing between 77 and 80. I don't think we need worry though. Pretty sure they will continue.

Hiya,

They'd be silly not to when their latest cd's this good. Thinking re your comment.

As an infirm Spanner, it's a sad fact of life those who do these things for me often don't = those who truly love me; we end up really close cos we sort of have to be, it makes our lives easier, but @ the end of the day doing all this for me pays their wages.

So it's not just the loss of the band. I do know the confidante/imaginary friend thing was my over-active imagination but it was a lifeline.

Nothing at all wrong with an over-active imagination, Claire, as long as you know that is what it is! I imagine all sorts of scenarios, both good and bad, and when they start to upset or excite me I remember what is really important. I could describe myself as head in the clouds with both feet on the ground but that would make me far taller than I really am :-)

Cheers

Dave

Thank you, Dave, for that link. I listened to the sample from The Fleece Song and enjoyed it. I'll try to listen to more when I find time.

Claire M., because you have written that you like fantasy, I wondered if you had any information for the Fairies and Irish Music thread.

Hiya,

CL: I'll have a look.

My gnomic friend: in my made-up world, the mythical version of MP was always the best @ giving advice, ssshh'ing/reassuring me when I was upset:

[ "come here to me; shelter thyself under my coat" ]

dispelling anxiety, etc. though she was often rather stern w/ me; the mythical version of Tim [Hart] never took anything seriously, broke into song all the time & used to make me laugh until I nearly weed myself. I "miss" them.

I always took any advice as if coming from real sources – I suspect that was my way of making it stick -- & always say if some musician, actor, character, etc. *didn't * become a "mythical companion" I can't have rated them that highly. How I wish she could advise me now. Even if the answer to my ? re SS carrying on is NO. I just want to know.
