14 Dec 13 - 04:12 PM (#3584137) Subject: Lyr Req: Restless Farewell From: 10r Hi Mudcatters- Totally by accident I caught the ShowTime specials on 1)Creating the movie Another Day Another Time by the Coen Brothers, loosely based on Dave Van Ronk's biography. This was followed (or preceded) by 2) the concert film the Coen's made with their music producer T Bone Burnett. In case you aren't aware the mission was to recreate or portray the "folk scene" before Bob Dylan. While I haven't seen the movie yet, the documentary on creating it and the concert film I thought were both great. Most interesting was the blending of new and old voices and talents that were part of or influenced by the folk scene. And what was even better were the individual takes on (true folk-ization ?!) of what I'll call traditional folks songs; new twists, new lyrics, etc. I was most intrigued by Marcus Mumford's with Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers version of Restless Farewell or The Leaving of Liverpool. Just wondering if anyone has the lyrics they used. Catch all 3 (Movie, concert film and documentary) if you can. I might just try to find a copy of Van Ronk's bio and read it as a result. Thanks for any help. Gary |

You don't know them if your style of music is mainstream pop. But if you enjoy folk's ever-changing blend of country, blues, gospel, bluegrass, Irish and maybe even a little rock, you don't want to miss Marcus Mumford singing the classic "Restless Farewell," which was also called "The Leaving of Liverpool," in Ireland on a trip around the folk music world.' Sorry, Gary. That piece of article just above is from the NY Daily News and the part about Restless Farewell being called The Leaving of Liverpool in Ireland sounds like bunk to me. Restless Farewell has some consanguinity with The Parting Glass, but AFAIK not with TLoL. That said, I have no way to hear the song and it is certainly different than Dylan's version according to some stuff I've read. So, my apologies. I cannot help you at this time. |
