There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now...

Gee, Sandy looks like he's everybody's dad. That's kinda how it felt, wasn't it?

Rest in peace, Sandy.

It was a very special gathering. I am almost at a loss for words as the memories come flooding back. My life was forever altered by that gathering, such wonderful friendships made. I miss Sandy more than I can describe.

AHHHH Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end; we thought they'd last, forever and a day...

It seems like only last fall--it seems like another lifetime ago.

We miss those who have gone onward and welcome those who have joined the circle; keep playing the canon.

This is the Mudcat thread (1999) that Sandy responded to and drew me down to FSGW Getaway 1999.   It's all about the stories/folklore, really - The Fox Went Out ......

It's funny to see that my ISP in that day was Maryland's 'Clark.Net' which was run out of a barn in Ellicot City :^D

I remember that this picture was taken almost as an afterthought just as people were heading out to their cars to leave. This should help to explain the somewhat ragged arrangement of bodies.I'm really quite terrible at remembering names. I am certain that there are some shown in the photo whose names I should know; but please forgive me for having such a bad memory. Please fill in the blanks as I attempt to list people from left to right:

Front row: Roger in Baltimore, Susan of DT, Charlie Baum, Barry Finn, Uilleand, Moonchild, Joe Offer, Jeri, Max, Blank, Dick Greenhouse

Second row – which after Carolyn sorta becomes mixed with the back row: Barbara, Duane D, Allan C. (kneeling behind Charlie Baum,) Blank, Blank, Carolyn, karen k., Sandy, Cara, Blank, Blank, Blank

Back row – if I can call it that: Blank, Blank, Vixen, Reynaud, and then I am rather at a loss until I run into Bill D, Blank, Blank and then Big Mick standing more or less next to Carolyn

Which one IS (or was) Sandy, please? There are two or three who could be the young man who was a dear friend in London in 1958. But which of them is himself 41 years later!?

When I joined the Cat just after Sandy died, I mentioned to my sister, then 85 [now 89 & I am 82 this year] that he was dead and asked if she remembered him singing at my 26th birthday party in Hampstead in May 1958. "What, that beautiful young man with the wonderful voice," she exclaimed. "How could I ever have forgotten him?"

O tempora...

From Allan C's key a couple back, I gather it's the tall one in a white baseball cap. Is that right, or did I misread? -- the rows tend to merge.

Many thanks. So I take it Carolyn, whom of course I also knew well at the time, is the lady on Sandy's right [our left] with a sort of white label or patch breast-high on the left [our right] side of her sweater/cardigan.

I am very grateful for this help in identification after so many years.

Michael... I have some nice color pictures of Sandy & Caroline at the Getaway in 2001. I will upload them soon... (I am having to transfer all my images to a new site, as MyOpera is closing on March 1)

I have many pics from various Getaways... will try to get them up also.

In the meantime, here is the MyOpera site which will be good for the nect 5-6 weeks

http://my.opera.com/extree/albums There are several Getaway albums there, but only 05,07, 10, 11.

Okay, we've clarified Sandy's position, so, working to HIS left we have identified Cara; but we still don't know the names of the three people further to OUR right before we find Rita. Also, we don't know the names, (proper or Mudcat,) of the three women above the shoulders of that space between Roger in Baltimore and Susan of DT.

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway99 - Group Photo (Sandy P.)
From: Allan C.

I think my problem with identification stems largely from trying to think of these folks as standing in anything resembling rows. So I will begin again by attempting to list them in order from left to right as though there were a vertical line moving in that direction (which is precisely the way I am doing it.) Thus we have:

voyager, Roger in Baltimore, Blank, bbc (with Mudcat shirt,) Blank1 (above and behind bbc,) Duane D., Vixen, Susan of
DT, Blank2 (almost directly above Susan of DT and behind Duane D.,) Reynaud, LaMarca, Charlie Baum, Lorraine, Jennifer Woods, Bill D, songbob, Barry Finn, Blank3 (with Mudcat shirt,) Uilleand, Big Mick, Moonchild, Carolyn, Joe Offer, karen k, Jeri, Sandy, Max, Cara, Sondra Steigen, Blank4, Dick Greenhouse (bending over in front of Blank4,) Blank5, Ferrara

At least I think this is right so far. Please correct me or help to fill in the Blanks. Thanks

From left to right, vertical line, etc:

From: Allan C.

Unless I am sadly mistaken this picture was taken at the very first Getaway that Mudcatters were specifically invited to intermingle with the FSGW folks. This was in 1999 and was at Prince William Forest Park in Northern Virginia.

Annamil, so far as I can recall, only attended the second gathering held at Havre de Grace in 2001.

The (somebody else next to Max) and to his left is, according to Bill D., Sondra Steigen.

Blank4 and Blank5 are the middle two people standing in the rear to Sandy's left and to Ferrara's right.

Thank you very much indeed, Jeri. I do certainly remember her from the gathering she had at her Jersey Shore house in 1998, (as well as the ones she had after). That was when I first met Bill Sables. But damn me for a lousy memory! I really thought she had only been to one Getaway. But I would really have a hard time believing she is Blank5. in truth, I am pretty sure that the one you indicate, Jeri, is not Anna; but I am not acquainted with who else she might be. At the same time I truly appreciate how difficult it is to make a positive ID from this medium quality snapshot. I'm reasonably sure, though, now that you have helped me to remember it, that AnnaP, (as she was known in those days,) and her husband had to leave early, after the first night and therefore, could not have been in the picture.

As my recollection goes, and believe that as you may, we were all packing our cars or getting ready to leave, if we hadn't already done so, and someone cried out that we should have a picture done. So, whichever of us was handy formed ourselves hastily into a pose proper to the occasion,(I think it was along side of the "meeting hall" where we all first assembled and sang in a huge singaround before much else happened,)ad thus the picture was taken. It is as likely to have FSGW members in it as it is to have Mudcat members in it. It may even have spouses of significant others of either caste in it for all I know. I only know that I can't identify a few of them despite being well acquainted with a good many of both FSGW and or Mudcat members of that era.

Please, to avoid more confusion, when someone may attempt to identify Blanks in the photo, name them according to Blank1, Blank2 or Blank3, etc., perhaps helpfully adding of whom they are on the left or right or behind.

Hi, folks, Got your PM, Allan, on my iPad mini, but can't login on my desktop. I'm not around mudcat much, these days. I spend more time on flickr:

I'm not sure I can be of much help, except in a couple of spelling/name corrections (that I hope are correct!) Caroline was not a member, as I recall, but was always listed as Caroline Paton. Sandy's mudcat name was Sandy Paton. Bob Clayton posted as Songster Bob or Songbob. His wife, Jennifer, posted as Knitpick. I believe Allison's (vixen) sweetheart was Renard, not Renaud. Dick's name is dick greenhaus. I tend to get LaMarca & Susan A-R confused. Were both there? And I'm sad to say I don't recognize Anna. As you note, Allan, the lines are somewhat confusing; here's my best shot:
Back Row (L-R): voyager, Unk, Unk, Vixen, Renard, Bill D, Big Mick, karen k, Unk, Ferrara
Middle Row (L-R): bbc, Duane D., LaMarca, Lorraine, Knitpick, Songbob, Unk, Caroline Paton, Sandy Paton, Unk, Unk, dick greenhaus
Front Row (L-R): Roger in Baltimore, Susan of DT, Charlie Baum, Barry Finn, Unk, Unk, Joe Offer, Jeri, Max, Unk
That was my only Getaway, so far. I had a wonderful time & have considered going again, but for distance & a certain unnamed 'catter who so embarrassed me by openly ridiculing my (supposed)camping snoring at Old Songs that I've been hesitant to ever sleep in the vicinity of others, since that time. Next year might be a possibility, since I'm retired, now, & free as a bird!

Love to all,
bbc aka Beebs aka Barbara

Sonnet 03/11/07                                  MLXV

To absent friends and lost loves let us drink,
Recalling smiles and times that all once shared.
On those no longer near let us now think,
To bring back reasons that for them we cared.
Some are not here, yet still remain, within
The songs and words they left behind. And some
Are in our souls, when hopes or dreams begin:
A part of what each of us have become.
To those apart let us now raise a glass
And take a moment to give thanks for all
That we from others have ourselves received.
The world's a school, and our lives just a class
In playing well with others. Can we call
It more? Are we by our egos deceived?

bbc--I don't mind being Allison if I get to have her voice too!
I'm still Vicki, though, and Reynaud is still Tim.

Annamil was definitely at a Ramblewood Getaway, because I remember her SO (whose name I forget) taking a "drum solo" in one of the jam sessions in a cabin there.

I wish I'd met more of the Mudcats and FSGW folks so I could help with the blanks!

And it's bittersweet seeing all the people we truly enjoyed who have passed on...but I do wonder why I'm listed on the OBIT thread as Vic Baker...I'm pretty sure I'm still here. Must be another Vic Baker?

Anyway, sending hugs for all the great memories,

If a good picture is worth 1000 words, then we're on the way with this FSGW99-Mudcat group photo. So here's a little better resolution -

FSGW99-Mudcat at Prince William Forest Park (hi-res)

Besides Sandy's workshop/sing of 'The Fox' my other highlights that trip were meeting Fortunato (not in photo) and stumbling across a CIA/OSS historical marker on the grounds. Here's that sidebar -

Prince William Forest Park

From 1942 to 1945, at least two branches of the OSS trained on the grounds of Prince William Forest Park—Special Operations (Training Area A) and Communications (Training Area C).

In the security that the forest offered, the Special Operations Branch trained its advanced recruits how to operate behind enemy lines in sabotage, guerilla leadership and other forms of subversion.6 New recruits were tasked with concealing their own identity while trying to learn as much information as possible from fellow trainees. Recruits also were:

    Taught how to use weapons, radios and codes;
Make and disarm booby traps; and
Make low-level parachute jumps from aircraft.7

The OSS Communications Branch also trained its recruits in Prince William Forest Park. Recruits in this division learned Morse code and ciphers, covert radio practices and maintenance, as well as the use of weapons and martial arts.

I guess they should have include Folk Music Hootenanny's in their regimen :^D

I think Bill is onto something for #18. Take a look here, Bill: Back row, ninth from the left.

Yep... looks like her. I have several pics of her that are not online. I don't know if there are still records of who attended that year, but the B&W pic just made me wonder.

BBC asked if we might be able to identify the people in this photo. I see above that this has mostly been accomplished. Any additional comments or information?

Gee, we all look so much younger in this photo....but hey, it was 19 years ago. I can't find Dani in the photo. Where was she? Is that her in the back row, second from the left - #3?

Now I am not sure that IS me in the back row... I may have had someone else take a pic after I did. But Rita & I both are not sure that guy with beard to rt of Bob Clayton is me.. I seldom let my beard grow past muttonchops..

Thanks for reviving this, Joe. I had forgotten we had already gone through the naming exercise. Allan & maeve did a nice job. Nice to see it again & remember that happy time. Really hard to believe it's almost 20 years ago!

Joe, can you reduce the size of the image as it displays? It's stretched too much and the features aren't clear.

If you want to call it photoshopped then I should have applied a filter to clear it up a bit more. It's a really small photo. If the original sender can send me as large a copy as he has, I'll see what I can do with it.

It wasn't photoshopped. You just fucked with it. When I first saw it (years ago, before Joe posted it), I thought it had problems. It had too few pixels. I definitely don't think I look like me.

I just constrained it to a smaller area to make the pixels work a little better.

There is no way to make that look better - without major major filter work. I pushed it way down, to 400x228px. I'll send that to Joe.

I think a lot of photos back when this one was posted, had to be smaller in size to put on line or to mail. I know I had to sacrifice quality to be able to send stuff with my dial-up modem, and an e-mail program that limited file size. Whoever took it may have the original, but otherwise, this is as good as it gets. Thanks for trying.

I got my first digital camera in 2004. The pictures it produces were more-or-less equivalent to 4 x 6 film photographs, or to what I could get from scanning one of those photos. The file size was about 600-800 kb. Looking abck at theme, they seem fairly primitive. And Voyager's photo from 1999 would of course be even more primitive. By 2008, photos were still pretty small but getting better - file size was more like 2.7 MB. The file size on current photos is more like 6.5 MB, and the quality is much better. And I have a 4 terabyte hard drive for my photos and sound files, so I can store stuff like that.

To restate our mission - A 1999 meeting of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (fsgw_dot_org) and the Mudcat online traditional music community (mudcat_dot_org). Characters in this crowd include Songster Bob Clayton, Sandy and Carolyn Paton, Big Mick, Roger from Baltimore, Ferrara, Westra, Charlie Baum and the like.   This is the party I belong to.

I was personally honored by Sandy Paton to perform a family version of 'Fox Went Out On a Chilly Night'. This was the first post to the Mudcat in 1999 -

At a family reunion this summer my mother-in-law showed me a version of this folk song which had been in the archives for many years. As an amateur musicologist I was interested in the 'alternate lyrics' to this classic folk song. Thought list readers might be interested so here goes.....

THE FOX

The old fox stepped out one moonshining night
Stood upon his hind feet just about right
I'll have some meat for my supper this night
Before I leave this townee (townee, townee)
I'll have some meat for my supper this night
Before I leave this townee

He went on down to the blacksmith's gate,
There he saw an old black drake
Come on along old drake and go along with me
You're the finest old fellow in this townee
(REPEAT AS PER FIRST VERSE)

The old drake sat still and the word cried NO
Just sat still 'cause he didn't want to go
If you eat no meat 'til you eat meat of mine
You'll eat no meat in the townee
(REPEAT)

He went on down by the farmer's gate
There he saw an old grey goose
Come along old goose and go with me
You're the finest old fellow in the townee
(REPEAT)

The old goose sat still and the word cried NO
Just sat still 'cause he didn't want to go
If you eat no meat 'til you eat meat of mine
You'll eat no meat in the townee
(REPEAT)

He went on home to his den
Out come the young ones 8-9-10
O father, O father when you again
You've had no luck in this townee
(REPEAT)

He went on back on his back track
He took the old grey goose by the neck
Her wing went flip-flop over his back
Her feet went dingle dangle down-ee
(REPEAT)

Old mother tipped up in the bed
Out of the window she poked her head
Old man, old man the grey goose is gone
I thought I heard her go quack, quack-eo
(REPEAT)

The old man jumped up in his shirtail
And with toe dogs on the trail
They caught the fox at the end of the trail
And that was the end of the fox-e-o
(REPEAT)

END

Memories...
I took the top pic with the identifying numbers, then my wife, Ferrara, took the bottom one while I ran over and kneeled at the far left.
We are fewer now, but still doing what we can. I just 'attended'...virtually... my 42nd consecutive Getaway.

Thank, Voyager

That needs clarification... it is NOT me #15 in the B&W pic. There was some shuffling. This was taken with my first digital camera, which I was not pleased with, and which I returned right after the Getaway. I may have been the only person there with one.

Oh my... now, upon looking again at pic Joe Offer posted a few years back, I see myself AND my wife in the same pic. I can only assume we took at least 3 pics. Maybe #15 took the last one.

Memories include Big Mick appearing very late Friday night after driving almost non-stop from Michigan..... and does anyone else remember the unloading area near the mess hall? There was a **low** steel chain between two posts to prevent people from driving cars further.
Late one night..?Sat?.. I was walking back from my cabin and not seeing the chain, tripped on it and fell flat... OOOF... Jeri happened to be maybe 30 ft, away near the building and rushed over to see if I was badly hurt, asking me to take it easy. She had medical training in the military and was ready to help. Fortunately, I was only a little bruised and scratched.

Oh... BTW... much music happened between falls and pic taking...
