23 Jan 14 - 11:32 AM (#3594987) Subject: Obit: Dorothy Fyman /Song and a Story From: r.padgett Dorothy Fyman, latterly the Singing half of a Song and Story has passed on Monologue John Bartley was Dorothy's friend and companion for a number of years and they frequented folk song and performance type session in and around Greater Manchester and Sheffield and at folk fstivals John I have known a long time and similarly Dorothy who was 82 when she died this am I believe January 23rd 2014 To say that Dorothy was a character would be understating her interesting and eventful life. She was married to Ivan and had children who are both musical and very intelligent. Ivan was from one of the Eastern block countries I believe not sure exactly where and worked in the mines, his politics I understand were not exactly tolerated (no doubt others can fill in the details) Dorothy was a mine of of information and of songs and certainly a Socialist Details on funeral arrangements when I have them god bless Ray |

I only knew her slightly and then only from fairly recently, but she was a character and a socialist to her bootstraps. Bloody good singer as well. One puzzle I was never able to sort out. The last time we met she told me that she had collected songs in north west Scotland in the early 1950s. I think it might have been in conjunction with the School of Scottish Studies. I was hoping to fill in the details when next we met, but alas that is now not to be. In any event, God help the scab or blackleg who tries to inveigle their way into the kingdom of heaven now. |

Feisty to the last crumb, and beyond. Staunch in the extreme (and all the better for it!), and utterly true to her lifelong convictions. A compelling storyteller, a mine of information and yes, a mighty fine singer. She did not suffer fools (and was proud of it). Me, I shall never forget her personal kindness over the (comparatively) few years I knew her. Her warmth and sincerity will live forever in my memory, as will her valued support for mine own humble endeavours, which gave me much courage. I look forward to learning more about her long, eventful and fascinating life as this thread unfolds... Meanwhile my deepest sympathies and condolences go to faithful companion Monologue John and to Dorothy's family. PS - Max - thread title needs to be corrected please, Dorothy's surname should read FRYMAN. |
