From what little I have read, it doesn't sound to me that her mental health issues render her not responsible for her actions, which were quite deliberate and carried out with malicious intent. Not saying she doesn't need help. But it does sound like (again, I don't much about this situation) it is appropriate for her to be held criminally responsible for her actions. In the fwiw department, I find the comments on this thread regarding her physical appearance to be offensive. |

No need to discuss Ms. Chapman, we have our own multitude of "you know who"s, including (as Greg suggests) but not restricted to the OP herself. There is a difference though: in spite of her queer motives, Ms. Chapman acted on a very rational plan for precisely defined goals. In contrast, aggressive Mudcatters often fail their self-professed agenda completely, and any possible secret one, except for making fools of themselves (- "onanism", as one of them admits or boasts). What can be done? Tell them from time to time, so that they cannot plead ignorance. Offer help, or recommend seeking help, only if success seems likely. Ignore otherwise. |

As to punishment versus treatment etc, it's very difficult to ascertain IMO how much someone is in fact responsible for their actions. And even harder to decide how to deal with such cases. I just felt that this lady may have had issues of a deeply emotional sort, which possibly drove her to vindictive behaviour. I felt pity as well as shock at what she did. |

I see what you mean about the case of Michelle Chapman. Just when we thought we had seen every kind of falsehood the Internet had to offer, here comes another one. Now Chapman has pretended to be actual people attacking her. Ordinarily this would be simply neurotic, but Chapman was stupid enough to commit libel and to trigger a criminal investigation. Thieves have figured out how to make their caller ID simulate the local police department, and they are calling people and dunning them for non-existent parking tickets, hoping to get money or critical information. As to what Griska said, It is not up to punish other forum members unless we can do it without being unkind, impolite argumentative or snooty. I think that it might be easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle. Our real choices are to point out their behavior and hope that they comply, to ignore them, or in this case, not read a whole lot into their motives when they are not actually trolling. How about we give them the benefit of the doubt and only complain when they are actually doing something wrong? |

What I wrote about Lizzie C. was meant as a short information for those who did not read, say, the thread titled "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" she started last year. It comprises the motif of posting under various names. No need to "read a whole lot into their motives", just read it out of the threads. Strange thing is that most offenders see themselves as victims, acting in self-defence or defending other victims. Often they do have a point, yet they act inadequately and inhibit others in exercising their freedom of speech. Strange thing also that other Mudcatters feel prompted to write phrases like "she is actually a nice person" or "I am surprised to read that you can have kind emotions". Something must have gone wrong with the communication. If I sound snooty myself, I apologize: I definitely do not enjoy it. Certainly I am not talking about enforcing rules by policing. My suggestion was to ignore them- the "trolling" messages. |

I'm thinking especially of vulnerable young women who take nasty remarks so much to heart, and in some tragic cases commit suicide or self-harm as a result. But ignoring can't be so easy if the remarks concern members of ones family, ones appearance, attacks on ones character etc. These things sting and hurt, like 'poison pen letters' of times past. As an oldie, I'm amazed at the power of the little electronic screen. If only vulnerable people could just switch it off, and turn to the real world, form real friendships and get involved in a real life, as we used to do fifty years ago. It's very sad. |
