There's a PBS documentary called "Riding the Rails" about all the teenagers who did just that during the Depression. I got the impression the CCC was a great escape from poverty and generated real wages. Should I take the lyrics more facetiously than I seem to be doing? |

From: Reiver 2 The CCC experience involved a lot of hard work, and little pay -- but compared to the alternatives available to those who signed up it wasn't that bad! I've talked to quite a few men who were in CCC camps and almost without exception they felt greatful to have had the CCC available to them and, all things considered, a positive experience. They did some fantastic work on (among other things) roads, bridges and buildings in the National Parks and Monuments that are still being used. For some reason, I never had come across that song. |

When the Feds closed down the program it was turned over to the states, property and all. Most used the property and existing camp buildings for something else of tore them down and sold the land. A few states, Ohio included restarted the programs and it is alive and well here as an alternative to the Job Corps. I've had a couple of my foster teens go to work for the CCC and have done quite well. They build parks, log cabins at the Historical Society, flood control, and even a local theatre renovation. Its a good deal for the kids who take advantage of it as a stepping stone. Spaw |

After i learned the song from the NLC Ramblers i sang it for him & he said pretty accurate. For those who go to Clifftop each year (self included) that started life as a CCC camp! they built some wonderful things |

Over here, they had that sort of program in the Depression - ex-officers and university graduates (upper class in those days) building roads in Sussex with the other sort of people, but I don't know what ours was called. |

It rang true to the tales told by a wandering, footloose, uncle (by blood a second cousin - but he was so much older he commanded the title of "uncle") he left home at 12 returned at 15..... what a hair-raising set of adventures he could tell. |

From: Art Thieme Joe, it was the N.R.A.-----------NATIONAL RECOVERY ACT (nothing about guns) under whose auspices the Witer's Project was handled. Just put the words (not the innitials unless you want gun stuff) into a search engine and there it will be. Gave work to many writers doing the guidebooks to all 48 states. And I think all the murals in schools and public buildings were done under them too. Don't know many details. But the NEW LOST CITY RAMBLERS had songs of the N.R.A. on the same album for Folkways---SONGS FROM THE DEPRESSION. Art |

It was a true folk song in that there were hundreds of verses added by the men of the CCC. Some, like those you've given, he could sing in the house; there were many others that he sang only when we were out in the back fourty. Who says you can't have sex education through song?? BTW, his job with the CCC was planting rows of trees on farmland in North Dakota as windbreaks. Last time I was there (about 10 years ago) there were still a few around. Also he, like a lot of others, went directly from the CCC to the Army; seemed like the thing to do for a couple years. Except that WWII came along and the two years got extended. Lyle |

I don't remember the time element, but you were either in for 3 or 6 months. After you get out you had to wait a certain amount of time before you could re enlist again. Probably to give others a chance to enroll who haven't had the opportunity. My father first duty was a camp in S.E. Louisiana where there was cut over piney woods and they had to fight brush fires. In his second enrollment he went to Mt. Lassen Park to clear trees to build roads. |
