Just Voices Singers’ Session – Hunslet (Yorks.)

20 Feb 14 - 06:07 PM (#3603368)
Subject: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.)
From: MoorleyMan

Starting on Tuesday 25th February 2014 and then on the last Tuesday of each month: "Just Voices", a new singaround/session for unaccompanied singers only (no instruments).
Venue: The Black Bull Inn, Kirkgate, Birstall, West Yorks. WF17 9PB (UK), in upstairs function room with good acoustics. Friendly and welcoming pub, good beer.
Starts 8 pm prompt. Free admission.

To quote the flyer:
"The aim of this friendly singaround/session is the sharing of good songs: whether they be traditional or contemporary; rousing chorus songs and harmonies; or solo ballads". (This might also include the occasional monologue or poem, I understand.... )

And before any musicians get the chance to be offended - this is the first gathering to cater specifically for unaccompanied singers that I can recall in the Yorkshire area, in quite some time (it's a good ten years since the popular and long-lived Otley Red Lion singers' session folded).
After all, there are plenty of sessions for musicians only, so why not one for singers only, just for a change?

As well as singer-participants, listeners (audience) are also most welcome.

Come and give it a try!

Looking forward to seeing you there Joe. You're always most welcome.

Now Guest, no need to be so negative - there's no shame in this new venture, it's just an honest attempt to plug a gap in the scene, whoever else is involved. Hey, give it a chance - it might just work...

First night went well, with a decent and appreciative turnout, 43 songs were sung in total, and a very enjoyable time was had by all.
Looking forward to seeing the absentees next month all being well.

Sorry you didn't make it Ray.
I believe the tally was that eight singers sang 5 songs apiece, and one sang 3.
Luckily no memory feat was required, as Maureen's a keen statistician and kept a record of the total!

It depends how you define " a session" Yorkie

According to the Oxford English Dictionary a session is - A period devoted to a particular activity: - so this activity is , in my view, correctly defined.

The thing is most folkies seem to regard a session as an instrumentalists only event and as a singer I tend to aviod them as I believe do many others so I think it is always a good idea to specify the type if event as Dave does.

Thanks for clarifying and confirming the terminology, folks.

The March session was sparser-attended than the February one, but we welcomed a trio from Sheffield who made some cracking contributions to the night.

Looking forward to the next session, scheduled for Tuesday 29th April.
Hope you make it, Joe (yes, your card has been marked!), it's always great to see and hear you my friend! (Well, you did ask me to post this to remind you...)

Thanks for a good night last night, not many there but some great songs and singing.
With regards to the query regarding Eric Bogle singing Stan Rogers Lock Keeper, it is on his CD "At This Stage" Disc 1. This CD has introductions to each song which you can play separately or omit, once you have heard them a few times, a good idea, Eric states why he sings this song.

A rather poor turnout for this month's session, due to various illnesses and holidays - but those who did attend experienced a nice relaxed evening trying out new songs and sharing interpretive insights in convivial company.

Unfortunately, we learned of some further medical issues, which combined with other known holiday commitments, will mean that AUGUST's session will have to be CANCELLED. Apologies for this, but we have no alternative.

Just Voices will, however, definitely resume in SEPTEMBER, on Tuesday 29th.

Thanks to those who supported the session earlier this week.

Hope all goes well for your next Meeting on Tuesday the 29th September, David, glad you are heading in the right direction after your operation.
I enjoyed greatly the July meeting the few of us present had a good, enjoyable and beneficial evening trying out new or resurecting songs not tried for a while.
Unfortunately I am unable to attend due to a collection of family birthdays around this time of the year, but I am sure you will get a good attendance and I hope you have a pleasant evening, hope to see you next month.

Nick Dow. Sorry, I've not visited this site for some time. Stamford Bridge sessions will now be Saturdays 28th November, 30th January and 27th February from around 7.30 at the Cricket Pavilion, Low Catton Rd. Stamford Bridge. It is a short season this year as Easter is early. We are also hosting sessions at the Wenlock Arms, Wheldrake on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 4.00pm - 7.00pm, the next few will be 11th October, 8th November and 13th December. We will see how well it is supported and review it in the New Year. All singers and acoustic musicians welcome at both sessions. The Wenlock Arms does a great carvery on Sunday afternoons so you can eat before you sing!

Here's some good-ish news:

I've had a phone conversation with the new manager at our venue (the Black Bull). He tells me that his tenure is "for the foreseeable future", and that our room booking dates will be honoured.

So it's a case of "as we were", then, with the 2016 calendar still reading as follows:

Every last-Tuesday-of-the-month – i.e. 26th April; 31st May;       28th June; 26th July; 30th August; 27th September; 25th October; 29th November…

… until December, when we plan to meet on the penultimate Tuesday (20th) instead.

We will, naturally, be continuing to put out feelers for a potential "Plan B" should the situation change again suddenly!

Thanks for bearing with us, and hoping to see you soon.

Cheers!

I arrived there yesterday evening for the monthly Drovers club night to find the Black Bull closed and boarded up, with no information on the door. Needless to say, there had been no prior warning of this.

Latest news:
We are monitoring the Black Bull situation closely, in case the pub suddenly reopens!!
However, on the assumption that this is unlikely, we have sought and found a replacement venue, which will be used on a trial basis for the session on 28th June.
It's THE GARDEN GATE in Hunslet, south Leeds (Whitfield Place, LS10 2QB).
The landlady has kindly granted use of the Rampton Room therein, a separate, smallish snug room with a closeable door.
Beers are reportedly good.
We will aim to start prompt at 8pm as usual, in order to keep to an 11 pm finish.
Access from motorway network is good, with bus routes also serving the A639. There's a quite large car parking area within two minutes' walk.
We'll need a good turnout in order to assess the longer-term suitability of this venue - so hoping to see you there!

For those interested, the first session at our new venue (The Garden Gate in Hunslet) was most encouraging. A smaller turnout than expected, quite possibly due to the atrocious weather (a very rainy night indeed), but this was made up for by the friendly atmosphere and select attendance. The venue is very accommodating, the room itself is good for singing, and those present approved of the venue, so (unless we get any good news re the Black Bull reopening!) the plan is to use the new venue again for July's session (on 26th).
Hope to see you there, Dennis - as well as others who were unable to make June's session.

It appears from some responses received that the new venue is not as convenient for all. It's still quite a distance for me too - but...
It is a good (separate) room in a good hostelry, with a closeable door and good acoustics - and the management is supportive. All of which counts for quite a lot in this day and age.
So, in the absence of any better options, for the time being the session will continue to be held at the Garden Gate. I'll keep you informed of any developments or changes.

Well it was a quiet session in terms of numbers, but one of the best yet in terms of quality of songs and singing. And especially good to welcome two new faces who we hope will become regular attendees.
But also rather sad to find several of our erstwhile stalwarts absent without explanation - could it be the enforced change of venue? (Thanks to those who sent their justified apologies, but concerned not to hear from others.)
Thanks to all who turned up and shared their songs and made this month's session so memorable.
Next month's gathering will be on Tuesday 30th August - the day after the August bank Holiday... we'll refresh nearer the time.

It was a brilliant session last night, with a welcome first-time visit from Zoe (all the way from Manchester) and the second visit of trio New Pippin Fancy (from Sheffield), also a couple more new faces. But many of our good local singers have been conspicuously absent since the venue change, which puzzles me since it's a fantastic room to sing in, the acoustics are wonderful, and the pub itself is a Grade-2 listed building - and it's not difficult to get to - and all feedback received emphasises the session's welcoming atmosphere.
Anyway, last night gave us some great singing and plenty of interesting songs, so let's spread the word and look forward to October's instalment, on Tuesday 25th.

The opportunity for singers to get together and sing/harmonies/practice songs old and new is getting less for many reason

Kelham Island Tavern 4 Sunday attracts many younger singer and is a joy!

Lincoln has a regular Jut Voices too (been once!)

Traditional and chorus singing does have good support and David's singer's session should be supported ~ I get where I can for practice btw and support where I can for my enjoyment and in support of all who wish and need to sing

But what else could've kept folks away??
Once again it was a small but loyal turnout (but serious thanks to all, especially Nick who'd travelled across from deepest Lancashire to be with us).
We shared half a dozen songs apiece, ranging from originals to good old Trad and Anon and Scottish Gaelic, Keith Marsden, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Peggy Seeger, the Byrds, Tom Waits, Jake Thackray, Eric Bogle, James Taylor, Stuart Marson, Dave Moss, Franz Schubert ... and even Johnny Preston!
And there was still plenty of time for all the craic, info, chat and banter in between...

Next session will be on 30th May - let's hope some absentees will be able to return then!

Cheers!

From: MoorleyMan

A really nice relaxed friendly session last night, contributed by a small but select grouping - and interestingly, the majority of the singers were ladies on this occasion. A great range of songs, ranging from Scottish Gaelic to English trad, 40s standards and 60s r'n'r to Americana, with plenty of choice contemporary folk classics. Looking forward to the return of some of our absentees next month (31st). Keep singin'!

We have a "Just Voices" session too, at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, on Burton Road in Lincoln LN1 3LY. It's a monthly unaccompanied singaround on the fourth Saturday afternoon, from 1pm to 3pm. Perhaps you could have a bus trip sometime? Next one tomorrow!

27 Oct 17 - 06:40 AM (#3884995)
Subject: RE: Just Voices Singers? Session ? Hunslet (Yorks.)
From: MoorleyMan

Great idea, Rozza - but it would be rather more than a bus trip - either a
train and two or three buses (minimum) or three trains and a bus and/or a long walk at each end. And even if I travelled by car I'd not make it across in less than two hours, although at least it's not bang in the middle of the city and parking would be easier even on a Saturday... But if I ever find myself in the Lincoln area then sure I'll make the effort to be there! I wish you well with your session.
You're still welcome at Hunslet, but I suspect you'd have a similar problem with the journey.
Slight thread creep here - we thought about making ours an afternoon sing, but found it impossible to get a suitable venue, even casting the net geographically wider.

While I'm posting, time to REFRESH for this coming Tuesday at Hunslet!

Well, it's over again for another month, and I am sad to report that it was a very poor turnout last night.
Thanks to Linn, Tom and Barbara for their loyal support and excellent contributions - you made the night worth while.
And OK, we received some legit apologies from other valued supporters (flat tyre, booked gig, impossible throat), but the weirdest thing is, no response whatsoever from almost everyone else on the mailing list. Well, maybe 24th seemed "the wrong" date, but it WAS the last Tuesday, honest! (30 days hath Aoril...)
So we'll try again - on 29th May - and let's hope for a better turnout, I could say "use it or lose it"!

And thanks to T and K for their continued support. We did, however, enjoy also a short visit from a four-piece female harmony group, whose members certainly appreciated the ethic of our little gathering, but for whom logistics prevent regular attendance.
But - begging the question - where is everyone else?

Well, another session come and gone - and we only just made a quorum this month, having received other apologies (thanks) due to illness and touring commitments..

Another nice relaxed sing, but where oh where is everyone else these days?
Answers on a postcard (and don't forget the postage rate goes up this weekend)...

Glad to report a much more well-attended session yesterday, with the welcome return of Nick Dow (cheers, friend!) and a first visit from a couple of fine singers from Leeds itself. Plenty of interesting craic and good songs.
The next Just Voices session will be on Tuesday 28th May.

Another month, another session - and another sparse turnout.

Kind apologies were received from those booked at Chippenham Folk Festival and also our good friend from the north-east, but the mailbox was otherwise silent.

Big thanks, then, to our loyal attendees, Lynne and Barbara especially, for their support and great singing. A nice relaxed sing was had by us all, and plenty of good songs were sung. However...

Next month's will be on 25th June, although the way things are going the session may well be becoming unsustainable and I am almost minded to cancel.
Watch this space for news...

Thanks to all who braved the thunderstorms on Tuesday to support us - it was a really good session, with the best attendance for 18 months, and some great songs and craic. Especial thanks to loyal singers Lynne, Barbara and Linn for keeping the faith and sharing their songs.
See you next month on 27th August.

Sad to report, our lowest ever turnout last night - just three singers in total, and two listeners. We still had a great time, but can't fathom why or how everyone else seems to have gone to ground.
The next session is October 29th, and I guess we'll carry on as booked till end of year, but it's getting to be too erratic and more of a matter for concern now.

Next session (if we survive) will be 26th November.

Garden Gate NB this is a zombie website. Just see the pics, writeup out of date.
Alas well over an hour of maybe wet motorway for me but do go if you're anywhere near Leeds and better still know your way round.

Well it didn't make any difference changing the date to ensure the show goes on - the downward trend of the past four months has continued, with only two fellow-singers at last night's session.
This makes no sense - and with no feedback from the previously enthusiastic absentees I'm forced to conclude that it might be the time to call it a day. It would be good to get some response before I have to make that decision, however, so now's the time to get in touch - please!

David I wonder if you are aware of the clash with a very well established and well attended and very very good singing session at The Abbey Inn in Newlay every Tuesday evening. It is my personal favourite evening. I know your evening is for Un-accompanied singing, and Im sure a lot of people would enjoy that, but I feel that some of the people who attend the Abbey on Tuesday evenings may well venture along if it was ie on a Wednesday. The recent winter weather may have had a negative effect as well of course, and it seems a shame because I can see you have put a lot of patience and effort in to keep it going. Hope it picks up a bit now in the New Year.

Yes Jimmy, good to hear from you after all this time, and many thanks for your constructive comments and good wishes.

Sure, I am (and always have been) aware of the continuing and well established Abbey session, although I've not been for awhile due to a combination of travel problems (it's actually pretty awkward of access from this side of the bridge!) and health issues (and I don't just mean old age!..).

But there are two important points in your argument.
First, when Just Voices was started (in 2014), every effort was made to AVOID a clash with any specific, known clubs or sessions that were any LESS regular than weekly, and views were sought from likely attendees on that score.
Since the Abbey is weekly and Just Voices is only monthly, then, I would kindof expect that anyone interested and able to travel to Hunslet would make it to Just Voices (instead of the Abbey, say) on just that monthly - occasional - basis. I would have done so in that situation if I were seeking a change, at least sometimes. Variety being the spice of life etc... But that doesn't seem to have happened - and that's what puzzles me. If I wished, taken over a typical month, I could go to four or five different sessions/clubs on a Tuesday - but inevitably things like bad weather, travel disruption etc get in the way and spoil plans and it's not always possible to change one's arrangements or routes at the last minute!

Second, you suggest a Wednesday as an alternative slot for Just Voices that you imply would be preferred by Abbey regulars who may well venture along. I agree, there are fewer clubs and sessions on a Wednesday hereabouts, but our current Just Voices venue already hosts a session on that night (that was another reason for our taking the Tuesday option when we were forced to move from Birstall when the pub closed down).

Having said all that, it would be good to "CUJimmy" at Just Voices, you would be very welcome to come and share your songs.

MM

Thanks for your valuable input, Nick, I was hoping you would email me!
I am collating responses to the questions and issues raised - one of which is Birstall. I am actively exploring this option, but so far have met with surprisingly little support for a relocation back to Birstall even if it were possible on either of those alternative nights. Also it needs a proper recce to the BB first - so is there anyone better placed geographically than I am who could do that, I wonder?

Well we broke all records with this month's Just Voices session - a nil attendance! I had received several apologies for absence in advance, various legitimate reasons for not being able to make it this month, but no other replies in response to my usual friendly reminder (I had requested advisement). So where is everybody???

I just can't believe that none of the many singers in Yorkshire are interested any longer.
And pace Nick, I've had no expressions of interest in moving back to the Black Bull even if it were an option. I know of only one erstwhile attendee for whom the venue was more convenient.

I really do need some support and guarantees of interest and attendance if the session is to continue past the next three months which are currently advertised widely in the folk magazines and elsewhere.

Subject: RE: Just Voices Singers’ Session – Hunslet (Yorks.)
From: MoorleyMan

As far as I know, the pub did not reopen after Covid.
Many of us have been, and remain, in poor health even today, thus unable to travel around extensively to seek out a new venue.
In any case, there appears to be virtually nil interest among local singers in starting up again in the current climate.
Speaking personally, the bulk of my singing nowadays is online with singers in the States or Ireland.
So Just Voices at the Garden Gate is no more. End of an era. RIP.
Oh well, we did us best... !
