So sorry to learn of the death today of my good friend Joe Frazier. Folksinger (with the Chad Mitchell Trio), Episcopal priest, radio show co-host with me long ago, dear person. Condolences to his partner John Tveit and all the rest of us who loved him.

Very, very sad to hear this news. The Chad Mitchell Trio's albums gave me so much pleasure when I first heard them so many years ago, and I can count a number of songs that I do because they first introduced me to them back when I was young.

Just sorry I never got to see them in person.

R.I.P.

The first record album I owned was Mighty Day on Campus.   I was so happy when a number of years ago I became a friend of his on Facebook. He and I chatted many times mostly about the state of the world, the poor and what we can do about people in need.   But I am also a musician and we talked of music too. And Through Joe I have met other musician friends. I feel a bit like a part of my life has gone.   I am sorry for his family I know he will be missed by so many.

I knew Joe in the '60's when he was singing with Bruce Murdoch. A helluva nice guy.

I too found Mighty Day on Campus quite early and subsequently bought all their records as they were released in Australia. Loved the early stuff but in some ways I feel Joe did his best work with John Denver after Chad left. A gifted singer - equally at home singing solo or in harmony. Condolences to his loved ones & friends.

One distasteful note though. The Trio's webpage has not yet been updated with the news of Joe's passing. Not good enough!!!

A bit shocked, so sorry to hear that. Been very much into the trio's music lately, just went to Joe's YouTube channel to see his comments yesterday. Still remember him responding to my thread here, an honor for me. Rest in peace, Joe.

I also had all the Chad Mitchell Trio albums----and Joe Frazier was the heart and the political conscience of the group.   He'll certainly be missed.

He had a wonderful, resonant voice, but his real gift was in his artistic sense--he could find ways to express the full range of thoughts and emotions, and make the transitions seem effortless and natural. And he had that wonderful sense of irony...Love you forever, Joe.

I first saw/heard the Chad Mitchell Trio in concert back in Oct of 1963 when they opened for Bob Newhart at Platteville, WI and I fell in love with their music. Have all the albums. Was blessed to have met Joe and become a friend of both Joe and his partner John. Saw them in concert again in 2009 & 2010 at Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI, and via Traveling Troubadour cruised/land tripped with them in Alaska. Thank you for your gentle soul, Joe...RIP.

The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles

REQUIESCAT

The Rev. Joseph William Frazier
January 14, 1937 - March 28, 2014

The Rev. Joseph William Frazier, vicar of St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Big Bear Lake, died in his sleep the morning of March 28. He was 77 and had been in ill health for some months.

Survivors include his partner of more than 30 years, John Tveit; siblings Sandi Lardani of Vero Beach, Florida; Ann Ellinger of Cornwall, Pennsylvania; Bill Frazier of Tiell, British Columbia; Carol Leszczynski of Sierra Vista, Arizona; Pat Moreno of Sierra Vista, Arizona; and Suzanne Frazier of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; some 15 nieces and nephews and many cousins. Another brother, James, died in childhood.

A memorial Eucharist will be held on Saturday, April 26 at St. Cross Church, 1818 Monterey Blvd, Hermosa Beach 90254 (310.376.8989), time to be announced. Burial will be at St. Columba's the following day, in a private service for family and parishioners.

Before becoming vicar at St. Columba's, Frazier was rector of St. Andrew's Church in Torrance from 1991 to 2006. He had previously served at congregations in San Francisco and Menlo Park in the Diocese of California. He began his ministry in the Diocese of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as rector of St. Philip's Church, Lansford (1973 - 1976).

Before his ordained ministry, Frazier was a folksinger and actor. He became a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio in the 1960s after one of its original singers left the group. The Mitchell Trio released many popular songs and appeared often on television, but they added a satirical edge to their folk harmonies with songs that took aim at the Vietnam War, celebrity culture and segregationist policies. Frazier later was to say that his most distinctive contribution to the group was this emphasis on political and social content. For a time, the trio also featured the young singer/songwriter John Denver, with whom Frazier maintained a close friendship until Denver's death in 1997.

Joseph Frazier was born January 14, 1937 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force ('"to get the G.I bill," he said) but found himself imprisoned and questioned by the FBI as a security risk because of his political opinions. "Apparently reading the 'wrong books,' listening to Pete Seeger, and talking about it were frowned upon," he remarked in his autobiography on the Chad Mitchell Trio website. He was offered an honorable discharge, however, and went on to attend Lebanon Valley College, where he met his future wife Charlotte when they performed together in plays. The couple was married in New York City a year after they left the college. The marriage later ended in divorce.

The Chad Mitchell TrioAfter six years with the Chad Mitchell Trio -- "getting the musical thing out of the way," as he told The Episcopal News in 1991 -- Frazier earned a degree at Yale Divinity School. He was ordained to the diaconate on June 6, 1972 and to the priesthood on January 13, 1973. After his first cure, he spent a year with a monastic order, the Society of St. John the Evangelist in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before taking a position at the Cathedral of St. John in Wilmington, Delaware.

Frazier never quite got the musical thing out of the way. Before and during his tenure at St. Andrew's, Torrance, he was part of a singing group called Eskaton. He also reunited with some of the former members of the Mitchell Trio, including Denver, for a PBS-broadcast concert in 1987. Frazier came together with original trio members Chad Mitchell and Mike Kobluk to perform a number of times in recent decades, including a benefit for the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief (now Episcopal Relief & Development) in 1979. They concluded a 50th anniversary tour in 2009 with a performance at Diocesan Convention and a benefit concert at St. Columba's.

I am saddened at Joe's death. I only discovered the Chad Mitchell trio 5 years ago and immediately bought all their CD"s. Their music, satire, and their beautiful harmonies will live on.

Joe was the spunk and bite of the Chad Mitchell Trio. I loved them for the satire that most other groups were afraid to do. Thanks, Joe

The music of the 60's shaped me. Not the least was Joe Frazier who was part of the great satirical performers of the time including Flanders and Swan, Tom Lehrer P,P,& M. who clothed their political messages in sweet wrappers which made what they had to say all the more effective.Vale to an insightful man.

I am so very sorry to learn of the passing of the great Joe Frazier.

I've been a fan of the CMT since they were on "Hootenanny," but never saw them until they performed in Ocean Grove, NJ, many decades later. I found common ground afterwards with Fr. Joe, as he told me of his one-time parish in the tiny Pennsylvania town I was born in. He just was as friendly as could be.

Rest in peace, Fr. Joe. I know where you're bound.

I was a devout fan of the Trio in the 60's and had the pleasure of seeing them in concert several times in New York City at their annual Thanksgiving Carnegie Hall concerts. In the last few years, I was thrilled to see them twice in Florida. It is often disappointing when we meet people who we idolized when younger and they do not live up to our expectations, however unrealistic our expectations may be. Not so with the Trio and Joe. Joe was warm, friendly and spent time after the concerts talking with his fans as did all the guys, including Paul and the other musicians. I will always cherish my memories of Joe and feel blessed that I was able to meet him and tell him how much he and his music meant to me. Rest in peace brother.

I am sure we will all miss Joe, his political wit and mellow voice...I never met him in person, however, I did work with Chad on a project here in Spokane, and through him, got to know the group. I can remember my early days listening to Chad and the trio, Kingston Trio and PPM, but CMT has always been my favorite...Rest in peace, Joe.

This is 2 June and yesterday I played one of my Chad Mitchell CDs. Afterwards I thought I would check them on the internet to see if there was any news of them. And there it was. Joe Frazier dead - he was just over a year younger than me. I have loved the Chad Mitchell Trio ever since I first heard of them through my brother in the 60s. And I always seemed to have a special liking for Joe (and his singing voice).
My condolences to Chad and Mike and Joe's family.

Same for me, went into the website just to see if any reunions were cooking. So sad about Joe. I followed them in high school and college, got to see them twice in person, and somehow managed to talk to Chad afterward both times. Rest in peace, Joe. You were much loved.

Went to a party with Joe and Paul Prestopino back in the sixties after a CMT concert. Was Joe's driver from the hotel to the concert. He was a funny guy. Full of energy. So sorry to hear of his passing. RIP my friend.
