Tech: Help - Duplicate Files

02 Apr 14 - 10:11 AM (#3614559)
Subject: Help - Duplicate Files
From: GUEST,MikeL2

Hi

My wife is an inveterate photo snapper. She takes pictures all the time.
Of course now she has almost filled up her computer with the huge number she has.

If that were not enough she copies and duplicates and triplicates etc etc and has them in unsorted and un-indexed files and folders all over the place.

I have a program that finds duplicates but her Folders/files are huge. Does anyone know of a free program that will go in at a Folder/file level, rather than at the hard disc eg C/ in my case?

I am sure that some of you photographers will be able to help.

Cheers

MikeL2

Have you tried talking to her?

Although if you're not on speaking terms, this might help.

I've used versions of DoubleKiller happily for nearly 20 years.

I use Auslogic's duplicate file finder 'cos it was free.

How 'bout putting 'em all in one place, then sorting by date & time taken and size - if she hasn't changed any, you'll easily see duplicates.

Hi ED

<" Have you tried talking to her?">

Yes I have tried but failed - she is completely a techno dummy and just doesn't take it in. Besides it is easier for me to do it than to try to explain to her.   lol

Cheers

Mike

Hi Bert

How are you ??

I have Auslogics free version too. But as far as I can work out it will only scan for dupes at Disc/C. level. I want to try to scan at individual folder level if I can.

Thanks for the comments though.

Regards

Mike

Hi Max

Good to hear from you.

Thanks for the advice. I have looked at Double killer. It looks good. I will try it and see how it compares with Duplicate Cleaner.

Tanks Mike

Hi GUEST Cupofteaatwork

Yes I guess your suggestion would merge all the files into one place, but wouldn't that be just the same as having them as I have now in DiscC/.??
Or am I missing something??

Cheers

Mike, If you go to the left hand panel and click on disk drives, then click to expand the drive that you are interested in. You can then go in and highlight the folder or folders you need to work with.

The interface is a bit clunky, so you have to bugger about, clicking things on and off 'till you get the hang of it. But it is easier to do than to explain.

Hi Mike

So, have you deleted the number two wife yet.

That would probably be the simplest option.
