just spent a very frustrating three days or so trying to download his three dvd set onto my computer - a vain attempt to raise my game as a geetar man.

didn't have a lot of luck - despite help from the expertson the helpline - so I've sent for the physical discs that I could have got cheaper on amazon,

wondered if anyone else on mudcat was having more luck in their attempts at self education?

I used to buy the odd instructional DVD - many years ago - and still have one by Woody Mann on the guitar work of Blind Blake. But I realised that very few of them were actually easy to understand. I prefer to get hold of sheet music for stuff I do these days - or, for some more informal stuff, do what I used to do when I first started: listen and work it out be ear.

When I started to put together my own instructional videos, I tried to imagine myself attempting to learn the piece, and asked myself how I would like to be shown how to play it. That's when I started to used fretboard diagrams in slo-mo to show each step of a tune. They've been very popular, but I have to say that everyone learns in a different way, and one path doesn't suit all.

Good luck with the Grossman stuff, Al.

to be honest I stopped reading tab in the early 70's. the record how to play blues guitar was apiece of piss - but contemporary ragtime guitar - the book made it clear to me my finger were about two inches too short -like the rest of my appendages!

no, the three dvd set was footage of all the old blues guys and Stefans take on it. so I figured i'd do that when my wife as watching Britain's strictly got the x factor on ice. you know, maybe learn something.

I'm not keen on SG's instructional methods, personally, but - as you say - the footage of the Old Masters alone is probably worth the money. Woody Mann presented his recent film on Rev. Gary Davis at the Ropetackle down in Shoreham a few months ago. Wonderful footage in that, and great to see some more of one my all-time guitar heroes. (Saw him live at the Manchester Free Trades Hall in 1964).

I used to have a nice album of woody accompanying the late joanne Kelly - he was good back then. I expect he's even better now.
