This excellent show that was first aired last December, is to be shown again this Sunday 27th April at 10pm on BBC4. The Show was recorded in New York at the Public Theater last October, for the launch of Stings latest CD "The Last Ship" which showcases the songs from a show of the same name, that opens on Broadway later this year - Enjoy!

Just watch the audience when The Wilsons hit it - they've never heard anything like it!

Saw most of it when it was on before, albeit late night in bed and nearly asleep. Worth watching again, although at times the instrumentation was less than subtle. Kathryn Tickell was nearly drowned out by all the rest.

Great show... some fantastic songs and music of Sting, played by some excellent singers and musicians. But for me the powerful sound that the Wilsons produce, brought life to the overall performance and just to hear one legend(Sting)credit another(Bellamy)for "Big Steamers" was priceless.

Correction - Dead Man's Boots - which, like the job, are left vacant when their owner dies.

I thought it was a brilliant production - what an amazing wordsmith he is.

Great concert! The song that is being left out the play ("A Convenient Arrangement"?) was the best of them all, IMO.

Quality performances by all on board.

wasn't sure about it - havnt been a huge fan of Sting since I was a kid , I loved the Police - but he's not been someone i'd listen to much in recent years. Some of it I liked some of it I didn't, some lovely songs , some of it a bit too showbiz - His stuff on Rogues Gallery and Son Of Rogues Gallery is good though - and he has a great voice.

When the last ship sails

Excellent concert recently on BBC TV, not quite sure why the Wilson family did goat impersonations during their song, but provided good back up vocals to Sting's wonderful songs.

Sting - story telling at it's best. The album is great, but this show really brings the songs to life. A 'FANTASTIC' must see show.

I read that the show lost 6 million dollars on Broadway and has closed. Sad to open on Broadway and not be successful but perhaps not the best descion, I would have thought provincial in UK then the West End and then Broadway.

I saw the BBC programme doing the songs from the show last night. The credits for that were long, which doesn't come cheap. Sting's performance was superb. The cast on the programme was astounding. The Wilsons, Katheryn Tickel and Jimmy Nail to mention but a few. But even sophiticated American audiences would find Tyneside a wee bit unfamiliar. It was recorded in New York.

The TV programme would have been a bit of a way to recoup some money.

Was there any sort of preview or opening in the UK prior to Broadway? I thought the BBC programme was absolutely excellent in every respect but - as you say - I could see New York audiences not responding to it.

The programme was, of course, songs from the play - and the actual play itself may not have been as good as the song set. Anybody see it?

it was ill advised and too ambitious to launch on Broadway, far too clever for that clientelle.

So someone made a huge judgemental error and it may have beeen G S himself who got carried away with his own image of self importance

I too believe it should have been nurtured established in the Uk and then the West End. It surpasses all other west end musicals in quality of musical and lyrical material

Great songs , well sung , catchy, appealing to emotions. I loved it from last year , I have the de luxe.

The Ballad of the Great Eastern , though not listed on the show is a masterpiece of a folk song with challenging musical arrangement .

It doesnt matter whether you 'like 'Sting or not , the songs are top notch

Beats Les Mis anytime.

stuff the 'traddies' they are too narrow minded to appreciate it

The Last Ship must rule the waves, it must not sink

Which particular 'traddies' are you wanting to stuff, breezy? Most of the traddies I know and some of the above thought it was great.

I'm quite a traddy and I thought it was great, although perhaps an unwise choice for a US audience. I loved the songs and the delivery, but I agree with the poster who commented on the Wilsons' strange imitation of Bellamy's bleating style. Jimmy Nail is a natural, and Sting himself was brilliant.

The tv show gets better the more times I see it ~ repeat on Catch up and saw a couple of times after being given a copy from first time round!

This was a great performance and Wilson's have a distinctive way of singing that fits

Solo performances of ballads by Sting and Jimmy and loved Katherine Tickell's pipes (whichever!)

Really sorry that the play/musical did not work out and maybe a relaunch from UK may get better response

...Sting will be joined onstage by many of the region's best loved musicians including fiddle and Northumbrian pipe player Kathryn Tickell and The Wilson Family from Billingham.

...

These will be the only UK performances of their kind."

Sting performs songs from his album The Last Ship in an intimate live performance recorded at the Public Theatre, New York. Inspired by the shipbuilding community of Wallsend in the north east of England where Sting was born and raised, the songs form part of his Broadway play. For his first new work in a decade he and his band, many of whom hail from the north east, are joined by actor and singer Jimmy Nail.
