30 Nov 18 - 09:39 AM (#3964012) Subject: RE: Req: Music hall song about Kippers penny-a-pair From: Steve Gardham There are no titles in Kilgarriff with 'Kippers' as the first word in the title. If this is the chorus the title may have more to do with the substance of the verses. Can't really get much further without further info on what the song was about. There were hundreds of Coster songs and this looks like it may have been part of one of them. Where's Billy Weekes when you need him? |
30 Nov 18 - 10:38 AM (#3964016) Subject: RE: Req: Music hall song about Kippers penny-a-pair From: Mick Pearce (MCP) BL catalogue has 9 scores with kippers in the title. Promising ones are The Kippers and the Trippers by P. Sweeney & Kenneth Lyle, London : Francis, Day & Hunter, [1902] and Kippers and bloaters by Edward St Claire, ca1927, no publisher given (awaiting full catalogue). No guarantee that it's either of them, but worth checking. Mick |
26 Feb 21 - 07:37 PM (#4095067) Subject: RE: Req: Music hall song about Kippers penny-a-pair From: GUEST This is a traditional South London hymn which I remember from my childhood in the late 1950s. Will you come to the mission? Will you come, will you come? For a hot cup of tea And a bun, and a bun. That's the whole hymn, at least as I was taught it. |

But it's interesting nevertheless. https://archive.org/details/otherwayrespectf00forb/page/n1/mode/2up https://archive.org/details/otherwayrespectf00forb/page/n1/mode/2up |

We sang: Will you come to the party, will you come? Bring your own cup and saucer and a bun, For _____ will be there, kissing ______ on a chair, Will you come to the party will you come? Hull 1950s but probably pre-war. |

I'm reminded of 'Like the Big Pots Do' guess was the title. 'Always hold your kipper with one hand, not two and wave it while you're talking, like the big pots do'. Gracie Fields on our record though search says it's George Formby's song. |
