MUSICAL THERAPY on PEACH CITY RADIO. The Give and Take of Giving and Taking---Part 1 of 3. Hear the other two parts over the next two weeks. Available now on our 'on demand' programming----can even be downloaded.

We'll hear from 3 individuals struggling with an alcoholic spouse, an abusive boyfriend, and a string of bad relationships----plus one who wants to string along his girlfriend and avoid commitment. Support and therapy provided by The Beatles, Kristy Howes (from British Columbis) , David Ackles, The Human League, Czars, The McGarrigles, Fred Eaglesmith, Grit Laskin, Tom Rapp, Mickey Newbury, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Missy Higgins, and John Forster.

Some of the songs I used in these programs have been suggested and inspired by Mudcatters (in this episode, the great John Forster song called Codependent With You was suggested by somebody. Thank you.

Larry, Is your Musical Therapy Radio program dealing with music as being real therapy, or is it just a figure of speech?

It's more than a figure of speech, GFS. But it's not quite using it as therapy the way that you do (I heard some of your music, and I do know what you mean when you talk about music as therapy).

I mostly use the music as a 'vehicle' to convey therapeutic ideas, theories----but also recognize that music can 'trigger' a lot of thoughts, memories, solutions to problems, etc.

At some point I would like to do a couple programs exploring the music itself as therapy----and any ideas you have, and any music of yours that you want to send me and give me permission to use would certainly be appreciated-------as would ideas as to other music that you believe is, in itself, therapeutic.

We used to have an expression in the studio in L.A....
"Art for therapy might be great therapy...but it might not be great art!"

As to mine, it IS being used in five hospitals in four states for cardiac-therapy, and several therapist's offices, and others, including massage and dental. You certainly are welcome to use it. It wasn't composed for money..but for people. The hospitals and other medical facilities that are using it, I gave them to use Pro Bono! I was grateful for their work with me...so, share the healing!!
When I was being released from the hospital, for my quadruple bi-pass, the cardiologist, during their mandatory release conference, told me,(Quote): "Your recovery has been nothing short of miraculous, I've never seen anything like it."....Later, in the same meeting, he said, "We've heard your music on YouTube, and wow..there is a LOT of healing in that music." (Honest to God, actual quotes)....

Let me know...

GFS, one of the upcoming series of programs I want to do is called "Harmony, Melody, Rhythm"....and it will focus on just that. I'm not so sure I agree with that beginning quote, though. Don't you think that if any work of art inspires positive changes and greater aliveness, then it truly is "great art"?

Please---could you send me some of (or even youtube links to) some of your most healing music? I'd love to use something from it. I appreciate (and I'm sure those hospitals and other medical facilities do as well) your generosity.

-Larry

Thanks.

Thanks GFS. I had heard Seascape before, and might use it in one of the programs.

Re. where you can find it? You can find any program on Peach City Radio (out of Penticton, B.C.), via Peachcityradio.org/programs.

For the archives of my programs (there are 4 completed right now), I posted the link in my first message. Here it is again.

You haven't heard 'Bittersuite: Joy', yet??...I know it's a bit long..but that's the one that is getting 'notice'....'My lady' is pretty good, too...Bobert, (from Mudcat) called it 'Delicious'....

Get back to me with an objective opinion...they help!

It's all fine material. But for songs with lyrics, they need to fit into the theme of one of my shows. What I heard of the 'Bittersuite Joy' sounds really good......but I wouldn't be able to use the whole thing, and I'm reluctant to 'cut up' anybody's art and only use part of it.   I do hope to get a chance to listen to all of it....but I don't really know how to give 'objective' opinions. My opinions are subjective.

If you think it's possible to listen to one of my programs and give me an 'objective' opinion, go for it.   Or you can give me a subjective one (and I'll do the same thing with "Bittersuite Joy' (a great title, by the way....at least in my opinion).

How does one listen to one of your programs? Internet? radio?

As far as 'Bittersuite: Joy', it is comprised of 5 movements, plus intro and closing...if you listen to it, you will be able to discern the different movements, and you may find where you'd be able use(or edit) the parts you may want to use. Toward the end (approx 23-24 minutes into it) it radically changes. you'll just have to listen to in, maybe a few times, to see exactly what I'm talking about.
Come to think of it, I'll listen and note the times, and where exactly, you could 'chop it up'...or, present it in segments, being as radio is not usually set up to playing long pieces.
BTW, when you listen to it, I'd strongly suggest a GOOD sound system...though it was recorded 'live', I went directly into the board, and spent time in the post mix with the engineer, and it IS broadcast quality.

BTW, you said, "But for songs with lyrics, they need to fit into the theme of one of my shows." ...What are the theme(s) of you shows? I might have something here.

Regards, Get back to me.

Right now the program is on an internet stream and via a podcast (through the link).   Peach City Radio is in the process of applying for an FM license for the Penticton area.

I have a huge list of possible therapeutic themes. To get an idea as to how I put these themes together with the music, I invite you to listen to one of the 4 programs that have already been posted in our archives.   (again, see the link above).

Some of the themes---and with all of them, the 'therapeutic' part includes helping people feel they are less alone as they realize others share these same dilemmas and issues, as well as inspiring ideas for moving beyond the 'problem'. towards some kind of solution.

THemes include:
Mindfulness (I'm currently working on a couple programs on this)
Addiction
Search for Meaning
Catharsis
Aging
Working
Forgiveness
Anger
Apathy and Engagement
Boundaries and Walls
Empathy
Forgiveness
The Fragile Male Ego
Interpersonal Effectiveness (Communicating Effectively).
Connection
Men and Women
Giving Back
Identity
Resilience
Life's Journey

and many others.

If anybody has ideas for songs that illustrate these themes, I'd love to hear them. I particularly need Canadian songs as I am required, in most instances, to play 35% Canadian content (a Canadian Radio and Television Commission requirement).

Thanks.

-Larry
