Music for Catspaw's Memorial

This weekend there will be a small memorial for Catspaw in Bremen

Karen has asked me to compile a list of Pat's favorite musicians. I've a long list, as Pat's tastes were so broad. Who would you include?

This is one I'm having at mine. It sums up my relationship and perhaps Karen and Pat's.

"We Both Had a Very Good Time" Derek Brimstone

Sorry we won't be there, but will be in spirit

Love to all

He posted this to the "what song do you want at your funeral" thread, back in 2001.

"LAY DOWN YOUR WEARY TUNE- Bob Dylan

Lay down your weary tune, lay down,
Lay down the song you strum,
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum.

Struck by the sounds before the sun,
I knew the night had gone.
The morning breeze like a bugle blew
Against the drums of dawn.
Lay down your weary tune, lay down,
Lay down the song you strum,
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum.

The ocean wild like an organ played,
The seaweed's wove its strands.
The crashin' waves like cymbals clashed
Against the rocks and sands.
Lay down your weary tune, lay down,
Lay down the song you strum,
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum.

I stood unwound beneath the skies
And clouds unbound by laws.
The cryin' rain like a trumpet sang
And asked for no applause.
Lay down your weary tune, lay down,
Lay down the song you strum,
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum.

The last of leaves fell from the trees
And clung to a new love's breast.
The branches bare like a banjo played
To the winds that listened best.

I gazed down in the river's mirror
And watched its winding strum.
The water smooth ran like a hymn
And like a harp did hum.
Lay down your weary tune, lay down,
Lay down the song you strum,
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum.

It seems some Tom Lehrer lyrics wouldn't be amiss at a musical evening to celebrate our late friend's snarky side.

I will ask for this to be done at any memorial for myself...someday.... and from my conversations with Pat, it's a sentiment he shared.

Rick Fielding's Catspaw's Rag.

Also, I do know he loved the song Old Time River Man by Tom Hartford....so maybe that and Gentle on My Mind.

As an aside, I was looking at some poems of mine that I had posted on my fb page....and found one that he had commented on....in his typical snarky way. Made me miss him more.

Thank you to all for the great suggestions. I am using them all. I can not figure out how to download Derek Brimstone' song. I would love to have it at the memorial. Any suggestion's. I am so grateful Pat had so many good friends on Mudcat. I will never be able to explain how much you all enriched his life.   I will never forget your friendship and kindness. Karen

Karen- If others here can't help you download Derek Brimstone's song in time for this weekend, you could always play it at the YT link, with your tape recorder or some such set up close by. I see Derek is on FB, so you may be able to contact him directly. He has been known to visit Mudcat- not sure whether he is a member, in which case you could send him a PM.

Anyone else have a better solution?

Karen, or Dave, or anyone else who may know. What day and time is the memorial service for Pat? I expect there are more than a few of us that might like to stop for a bit and join you in our hearts and minds.

I can't drive up, Karen, though I would love to. What I would like to do is set aside that time to take a pause, maybe touch base with Cletus, Burford and crew, blow up a shed in the back yard, or sumpin' - join the memorial through the ether, so to speak.

I know he loved Bob Dylan's Dream (That's Rod McDonald, not the Bob, who probably has good lawyers.)

I don't know if Pat ever heard it, and Sam Amidon likely wasn't a favorite, but this is for the rest of us, just because I really like this (I heard it this morning for the first time): My Old Friend, Sam Amidon.

As for songwriters, in his own words:
GREAT THREAD!!! I join lots of others in Woody, Dylan,Patrick Sky, A.P.Carter, early Lightfoot, John Prine, Harlan Howard, Paul Simon {says he writes around rhythms, but what a "wordsmith"}, Stephen Foster, Jean Ritchie, Tom Petty, Leonard Cohen, Richard Farina, Arlo, James Taylor.....

Also, Jim Croce wrote a tremendous number of good songs prior to getting famous {and killed}. And if the only song Emmylou Harris ever wrote was "Prayer in Open D" that's enough to be included. Also ran across a listing for "Turn, Turn, Turn" crediting it to Pete Seeger and God. Interesting pairing...did HUAC and the McCarthy committee also blacklist God? catspaw49

Fixed, after Jeri copied the wrong guy's post in here, and forgot the link to the thread. -Mod

Karen, Tristan and Michael, will be holding all three of you especially intentionally in my thoughts tomorrow and will also do the same to especially celebrate memories of Pat. I expect there will be a bunch of us joining you in thought and heart.

Just listened, Jeri. You really nailed it. Pat was such a good friend to so many people.

And Karen, he made so clear and said often that you were absolutely his very best friend and the love of his life. Thank you for sharing him with us. {{{{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

As an only occasional lurker, this is the first that I have heard of Catspaw's passing, and I would be remiss not to respond. I the early 2000's I communicated with Spaw regularly, and even though I kind of dropped off, he remembered me on the occassions that I did post. As a nurse, I followed Spaw's medical problems through the years.

We shared many interests, including Guild 12 strings. I am deeply saddened by this news. I can only say that he is now playing and singing with KatLaughing! As far as songs, I cannot add to what the loyal Mudcatters have provided. RIP Spaw, and bless you Karen. You are truely an angel. Thanks, BlueJay
