Hard cover: $35 per volume; Soft cover: $25 per volume. Don't know about the "Eighty " songs...THe two volumes contain two hundred and seventy-four Songs and Ballads with nine hundred and sixty-eight Tunes Including thirty-nine Tunes contributed by Olive Dame Campbell |

The original request concerned "Eighty English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians" collected by Cecil J. Sharp and Maud Karpeles. It was (c) Faber Music in 1968, and issued in the United States by MIT Press (with apparently later reprints). It is around 110 pages, and square format about 7.5 inches square. It includes sample piano accompaniments by Benjamin Britten for four songs, and chord symbols for guitar by Pat Shaw for many songs. Used copies are available online for under $20. "English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians" in two volumes, first published in 1932 and recently reprinted by Loomis House/CAMSCO (thank you to all involved!!), contains 274 songs with many variants. |

I once made an interlibrary loan reqest for a set of the 1932 edition of EFSFTSA from my local library. Hardly had I got home than the phone rang. "We've got the book you requested", said the voice on the other end. "It's in our library stock." I'd already checked the stock holdings and knew perfectly well that they hadn't got a copy of that particular book, so I went back to said library. There the assistant handed me a copy of Eighty English folksongs. "That's not it", I objected. "Yes it is. That's what you ordered and that's what we've got." "It isn't. This is a single volume, published by Faber in 1968. The one I want is in 2 volumes and it's about four times the size of that one, and it was published by Oxford UP in 1932." The assistant said, and you can still see the dent in the library counter where I banged my head in utter abject frustration, "Well, I can't see the difference". EFSFTSA had been out of print for years in those days. So, when I did eventually run a copy to earth, I photocopied the entire opus, lock, stock and barrel. |
