Today I learn that Icelandic volcano Bundabunga ( not Cowabunga !) has been exhibiting signs of imminent eruption, such that the authorities have issued an Orange alert to airline operators. Can we expect a posting soon from our Icelandic correspondent ???

Something may happen, or something may not. The last "imminent eruption" didn't amount to anything. The one before that made a lot of trouble.

The quakes thus far indicate magma moving under the surface. Will the molten rock come close enough to the surface to cause havoc? We don't know.

At present, Icelandic authorities are warning aircraft to stay away, and they want people to stay off the jeep tracks in the area - both sensible precautions.

No doubt, but there's hardly anybody there. It is virtually uninhabited territory.

I found a little video that tells how to say the name of the volcano.

BOW -er thar bunk a

the u in 'bunk' is like the u in 'put' or 'book'.

It's spelled Bardabunga, but the d has a bar through the top, and it's pronounced th as 'there.'

I read somewhere that in a million years these Icelandic volcanic islands will stretch all the way to Scotland. Always coming up stretching the Icelandic exclusive zone.
Its a takeover bid, folks! Remember you heard it from me first!

Anyone bothered?

Here's a quotation from the Icelandic authorities:

There are no measurements to suggest that an eruption is imminent. Previous intrusion events in Iceland have lasted for several days or weeks, often not resulting in an eruption. However an eruption of Bárðarbunga cannot presently be excluded, hence the intense monitoring and preparation efforts.

This all sounds very interesting ! My "other half" has a "thing" about volcanoes ,and in fact we became "engaged" at the summit of Vesuvius , although I doubt if we'll marry,as we would lose thousands of her pension money (thanks to our greedy government ).Cameron said that he was in favour of marriage , but marriage to a widow means she could lose her widow's pension ; of course, if we were gay ,it would be different, but we are not,so we are discriminated against !! What a crazy world .

now they are talking to people all around the North country about
the Big Flood that could come down from Bárðarbunga - you can say
Bowra boonga , but it is not hard to say the word , because í fhata

the letter Ð can be D ..so no problem folks ...we also got another news
today , don´t fly over the Mountain volcano HEKLA ...the stroke from the
mountain can reach 30 thousand feet in a fast time ...so what is going on in Iceland I have no idea ...all the best folks , and the the Saturday news from Iceland ...stay save , love and live you r live

How short our memories are! The eruption has an immediate neighbourhood effect, which is what you're discussing, but what did the damage was how it was carried by the wind. This time, for the next 24 hours it might head in our direction, but baarely reaches the Hebrides before the wind directions change and it ends up in the Arctic. After that, heaven only knows.

this volcano could go on for months and then we should ask god to help us , don´t forget about LAKI ..he erupt 1783 if I remember right ...
and it affect Eroupe , asia and America ...

stay save all .
all the best Skarpi .

http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/0824/639008-planes-on-alert-as-icelandic-volcano-erupts/   :

Aviation authorities are watching for developments in Iceland where planes are on high alert following a volcanic eruption.

Iceland closed airspace directly above Bardarbunga volcano yesterday after it began erupting.

The eruption is under the ice of Europe's largest glacier following thousands of earthquakes over the past week.

Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, has stressed that no eruption has breached the surface of the glacier.

Speaking to Icelandic television, Professor Gudmundsson said that although it was likely that no magma had reached the surface of the glacier yet it was better to be safe than sorry.

He said: "We dont know if this activity will show a similar pattern, but we have to be prepared. This run-up is positive in a way, because we have had time to prepare."

In 2010 an eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, in the south of the Iceland.

It produced an ash cloud that caused a week of aviation chaos with more than 100,000 flights cancelled across the UK and the rest of the world.

Just minutes before the eruption, officials in Iceland raised the country's aviation alert to the highest level of red, which warns that an eruption could cause "significant emission of ash into the atmosphere."

However, scientists who flew over the ice cap yesterday afternoon saw no visible signs of the eruption on the surface.

Experts in Iceland's Met Office said it was not clear when, or if, the eruption would melt through the ice.

The ice is between 330ft to 1,300ft thick.

The British Civil Aviation Authority said: "Volcanic ash can adversely affect aircraft in a number of ways. Jet aircraft engines in particular are susceptible to damage from volcanic ash.

Two working groups including airlines and scientists have also been established to act as advisers on ash forecasting and how best to use the output from the Met Office modelling system.

I think that Skarpi is right !! IF the eruption manages to melt its way through 1300 feet of ice ,there is going to a LOT of water (and steam !) in that area.

A heavy earthquake (5.3) at the site of the crater is read as the vulcano slowing down and falling in on itself. The warning to air-traffic has been down graded from red to orange.

Good point, Skarpi. I forgot about the tourists.

When I flew over Iceland a few years ago, I was amazed at how empty the interior is. The tourists didn't show up from air, of course.
