Does anyone know any more about this song - it's called Grandfather Brian and there is a set of words here. .

I recorded a chap singing a version of it in Gloucestershire but the webpage suggests it is American in origin. Has anyone else come across it?

Thank you, guest, whoever you are. So the song was written by the Newfoundland composer Johnny Burke [1851-1930]. Good. Surprising that it found its way to rural Gloucestershire. I wonder if anyone recorded it on a 78?

You're welcome, Tradsinger. IMO, the GEST site should be declared a national treasure.

I can't find a recording or lead sheet for the song but I will look further and get back here one way or other.

The lyrics appear on pp 114-5. I cannot determine what year "The Rose, Thistle and Shamrock" songbook was published originally.

The title page says 1860, but was that the first printing? Very grateful for your help on this, which has enabled me to put a learned footnote to an on-line collection which is being prepared. I've probably got all I need on that song. Can I put some more your way?!
