(Other) Sources for Lyrics

Subject: Sources for Lyrics
From: Thomas Stern

There are many requests for lyrics posted to MUDCAT, most receive
excellent responses.
I thought it might be useful to mention some online sources for lyrics
which may be of interest to folks on this list.

FOLK & BLUES
Smithsonian-Folkways http://www.folkways.si.edu/index.aspx
Most FOLKWAYS albums contained booklets with lyrics to the songs - these are now available as PDF files online at the Smithsonian website.

BLUES LYRICS
A series of books containing the lyrics to the DOCUMENT and YAZOO
albums was published some years ago. They are now out of print,
the author, BOB MacLEOD, died and there is no indication that the
family plans to reprint the books. Perhaps some member of the list or some libraries have copies.
Perhaps some enterprising soul out there would consider obtaining rights to the books and publish them on a CD-ROM, searchable and printable.....

MUSIC HALL

Perhaps others on the list can provide additional sources.
Best wishes, Thomas.

I hadn't known about the Bob MacLeod books. I've bought a few Document albums and many from Yazoo, but it's always so hard to understand the lyrics on those old recordings.

The Website hosting Michael Taft's Blues Lyrics Concordance is no longer active, but you'll find an archive.org copy of the Website if you click my link. I had a nice correspondence with Michael Taft last week. He isn't happy with the quality of lyrics transcription in the concordance or in his Talkin' To Myself blues lyrics anthology, but they contain a huge number of songs and are a pretty good guide to a general understanding of the songs.

I thought Rabid Squirrel's Jazz Archive was still working, but I can't get past the home page.

Roughstock.com still has a lot of country music lyrics.
http://www.cowboylyrics.com/ seems to have more-or-less the same collection

For lyrics from pop artists, try http://www.azlyrics.com/

http://www.bluegrasslyrics.com/ has a pretty good collection

Mudcatter Susanne(skw) has an excellent folk lyrics Website, http://mysongbook.de/

John Roberts and Tony Barrand have lyrics for their wonderful recordings at http://www.goldenhindmusic.com/.

http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/ is often quite good.

It's nice to see that the Robokopp lyrics site is still around. Good for folk and for songs in multiple languages.

http://ingeb.org/ is still around, covering ground similar to Robokopp.

Mama Lisa's World has children's songs.

http://www.woodyguthrie.org/ has a good collection of his lyrics.

http://www.zemerl.com/ has Jewish song lyrics in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino, English.

http://www.contemplator.com/ has traditional lyrics, plus MIDI arrangements for many songs.

http://8notes.com/ has lyrics from a number of sources, including the Digital Tradition.

GEST Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador is a great Website.

And, of course, there's the Mudcat Links Page (lyrics) and Online Music (often with lyrics)

"Triskelle - Spending Time in Ireland" used to be a very good source of Irish music. It was at http://www.vincentpeters.nl/

Anybody know where it's located now?

The lyrics (or lyrics/chords) sites I prefer are the ones that allow corrections to be posted.

There are a LOT of inaccurate lyrics (and chords) posted online, not to mention a lot with horrible spelling, punctuation (or lack thereof), etc.   And too many cases of a performer being inaccurately credited as the songwriter.
