Whitby New Year's Eve 2014? Any info?

Hi Folks - Just wondering if anyone knows what might be planned for the days between Christmas and New Year?
Are the usual crowd heading there, and has anyone discussed fancy dress themes, or where things might be happening?
Quack!
Geoff.

Hi Geoff
I'm hoping the usual crowd will be heading up for the fun & games. No theme yet but will keep you posted - unless you have a wacky idea!

My first comment should have read "does anyone want to SET the treasure hunt"

An up-date from the Endeavour. The new couple Mark & Tracey took over last week, they are very friendly and are encouraging the local folkies to use the pub and on Wednesday even made plates of rolls (ham, cheese etc) for us towards the end of the night. Tracey also makes REALLY nice crab rolls!

The pub will undergo a refurbishment in the not too distant future so hopefully it should be all nice and bright and sparkling for Christmas/New Year.

I know Jude has had a brief conversation with Mark regarding New Years Eve and they are happy to accommodate the folkies, not set in stone to my knowledge but looking likely. If this is the case the Treasure Hunt will start and finish from there as well.

I've not had dates from Jude yet so you'll have to watch this space.

Hi Raggy
Thanks for the update.
We are still not sure what our plans will be. Some of it could depend on when things might be likely to happen.
Wil keep watching this space.
Geoff.

Very true Guest ............. however I once worked with a young lad who was heard to comment "Christmas Day is on the 25th again ... it was last year too" We couldn't rib him too much his Dad was the quarry manager and not a man to be trifled with.

Incidentally Geoff was enquiring about the Ceilidh, Quiz and Treasure Hunt times and dates which to my knowledge haven't been programmed as yet.

Have the Coastguard and Regatta been informed?

One for all true folkies of course is the New Year's Day dip in the briney. Lovely and cool at that time I'm told and you are almost guaranteed to get your photo in the Whitby Gazette!

Several folkies have done the Boxing Day dip, but not that many due to not being here that early. They tend to drift in around the 27/28th normally. Certainly Aelfleda and Maggie have done the dip and Wombat as well.

Joe......... same quiz team as last year?

A bit of forward planning, if you are doing the treasure hunt you will probably need some paper to make notes on!

I've just about sorted the new year stuff so here's the info:
Monday 29th   - Treasure Hunt
Tuesday 30th -   Ceilidh
New Year's Eve - The Endeavour (that might change but will keep you all posted on that).
Fancy Dress Theme - Where Did You Get That Hat.....
Cheers for
Jude

Received from Jude Knight! I assume it is ok to post here as requested

Hi, staying locally, can anyone join in? Will guarantee to be sober, staid and respectable if needed. Can lie for England too.

Newbie, It is sort of understood that the treasure hunt is not really a treasure hunt but a treasure hunt in that the treasure you hunt is the beer in the bars sort of treasure. Am I making myself clear Treasure. I'll be a treasure and explain it clearly to you on the Monday when the treasure hunt starts (I have to explain it every year to some people who've been doing the treasure hunt for decades!) Bring a pen and some paper, there's a treasure.

PS Ability to lie for England is definitely an asset, if you're sober, staid and respectable you will be on your own, we've never had one of those before!

Normally teams of four but if you're by yourself we'll find you a suitable team to join.

A knowledge of Whitby can be useful, the Barnsley Lads and additional members never had a chance, too much beer did not 'elp

It's a long time since you did the quiz Ray, I've been setting it for about ten years and knowledge of Whitby has never been a criteria during that time.

Very true Raggy the Barnsley lads know a lot about nothing, twas the treasure hunt and the drinking of pints instead of halves and Nigels insistence on being always right and Malcolm going elsewhere instead of "logging off" and well Booker, lol

Happy Christmas to all our readers

I did confuse some people no end one year. In order to find the name of the pub I said that the pub was the symbol of St Mark, had some symbolism with Venice (or Vienna can't honestly remember now) and had a bank named after it. I found several people in the Black Horse looking puzzled instead of the Golden Lion! On that one question I suppose knowledge of Whitby would have come in handy.

The door has been a fiver or less in the past. Once the Coliseum has been paid for the room any excess is donated to a named Charity (RNLI, Children's Hospice etc)

There has always been a raffle and prizes would be gratefully accepted!
