From: the lemonade lady Some of you may know, I'm not long back from sailing part of the Atlantic circuit with my skipper/partner Jim. He sailed single handed to the Caribbean and i flew to antigua to catch up with him and sail home. We practice on the boat in anchorages and when becalmed. We are just back from leaving her on the hard in Portugal, ready for an adventure in the new year. Are there any other serious sailors out there who also sing? Our boat is called Chaos and she's a Contessa32 say Sally |

I have bit of a seagoing /sailing background ,having been in the Royal Navy for 11 years ( but invalided out to pension in 1974 ).As well as being in a folk-group aboard carrier HMS Eagle for 3 years ,playing "gigs" in Singapore,Hong Kong , and Perth , I spent 2 1/2 years at Hornet Naval Yacht Centre, Haslar creek , POrtsmouth ,helping to maintain a fleet of Bosun dinghies ( and sailing in them in the "frostbite" series ;Brrrrr ! ), "coxing" various motor-boats, and doing several cross-channel trips in "Merlin" , a 100 Square Metre "Windfall-class" yacht "liberated "after WW2 ; needing a crew of ten to manage the rig ( over 1000 sqare feet on one mast !) this vessel, built in Bremenburg in 1938 was REPUTED to have been Goering's personal yacht, although Portsmouth Command's "sister yacht "Marabu" claimed the same honour ,of course.Sailing at night across to Cherbourg could be quite a tricky thing in a crowded English Channel.Merlin has been totally restored in recent years,and now privately owned and called "Zee Arend" ( Dutch for Sea Eagle ). During this happy time I also helped to run a folk-club in Gosport , meeting such luminaries as Jon Isherwood, Pat Nelson and Diz Dizley , and playing in a band "Hay Fever" . Discharged in 1974,I worked as a "tug hand" and relief lock-keeper on the Thames.Moving to Bournemouth, I worked at Berthon Marina, Lymington, and Parkstone yacht club AND the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Poole ,as well as embracing the local folk scene ! I owned and sailed a litle "Lysander" bilge-keeler out of Christchurch. Now , aged 67 ,I am a bit "past it" but we have a narrowboat on the Severn ,went on a cruise-ship in September ,and are going on ANOTHER one (to Madeira etc ) TOMORROW !! (Oct 21st ) . Is that enough "nautical" and folk experience for you , Sally ? --- !!! |

At one end of the seafront, near an old castle, IIRC, there's a small bar which has regular fadó sessions. Not really aimed at tourists (though there is a cafe/restaurant providing standard tourist fadó a block or two behind it). Worth a visit... Regards |

From: Teribus IIRC bubblyrat there were three "Windfall" Class yachts taken as "prizes of war" by the Royal Navy at the end of the Second World War Maribu - Whale Island Merlin - Fleet Air Arm Capella - Hawke Division BRNC Dartmouth The story we were told was that they had been made to train up German yacht crews for international competition - i.e Olympics and the like. |

From: GUEST,LynnT Well, I retired in 2003 as a CDR USNR, with 17 years of day-for-day service to my name, but little of that was on ships, mostly I was in P3 avionics or sailed a desk. My air squadrons spent time in Rota Spain, Sigonella Sicily, and the Baltics, and I did a stint on the ground in Kosovo working comms. That said, I had me an O'Day 22 for several years, the biggest thing I could single sail, that I kept at the Ft Washington Marina south of DC, and I've been known to sing a few chanteys at Royal Mile and the like in DC -- I was the original compiler of the Chant'nal (sea chantey hymnal) later passed on to the curatorship of Vince Wilding. From: bubblyrat Reading your original posting Sally, I see that you fetched up in Portugal ; I was there last week aboard MV "Funchal" , in Lisbon , having also called in at Portimao .Our berth in Lisbon was next to the container loading pier and close to the dock holding MV "Azores" , actually the "Stockholm" of "Andrea Doria" collision (1956) fame, or infamy ! Still going strong after 70 years ; incredible ! |

In the early 70's I used to have a little yacht which was kept in Gosport - sharp left, past the submarines under pneumonia bridge and slightly to the right. I had a flat in Southsea. They used to LOVE me on the busses with all the gear I used to move around. Now I'm in Parkstone and I have sailed a bit up and down the coast on other people's boats. Not as much fun as having your own though. My dad helped to move, pack up and ship home some 'liberated' yachts when he was in the RAF. They took the bigger ones down to the port to be wrapped up in sacks of straw and put onto the decks of all sorts of vessels, then they went back to camp on a motor boat - they'd gone up and down river a few times with some very pretty boats and then some Yanks went by and set fire to all the ones that were left. |

During WW1 , my partner (Nicola) 's grandfather served aboard armed merchant cruiser HMS Andes, a former Harland & Wolf Royal Mail Steam Packet .In 1916, she and sister-ship HMS Alcantara engaged a German "Q"-ship called "Grieff".In the battle (off Norway ) , both the German and Alcantara were sunk with great loss of life.The point is ; I was looking at where we were berthed in Lisbon last week, and the cruise ship(s) berth is in a part of Lisbon called .......Alcantara !!!! Spooky !! |
