December Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing

16 Dec 14 - 10:21 AM (#3686218)
Subject: December Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing
From: Bat Goddess

The December Monthly Shanty, Forebitter, Ballad, and Annual Seasonal Song Session will be happening this Saturday, December 20th at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM -- and the PMAC kids had their thing last Saturday, so we should be unimpeded from having the full session this year.

This annual sea and seasonal song session usually brings out a lot of material not sung the rest of the year. We'll definitely have to do Brian Chadburne's "Shopping Shanty" and, I'm sure, Charlie has a few seasonal songs about traditional Maine weather, etc. It's wide open for songs we only get a short opportunity to sing each year.

See you there!

Linn

Hey, group...just a reminder to make a comment when you check in here so the thread doesn't fall off the bottom.

Thanks!

Sure, you're a member of the group, maeve! Just because you can't get to the shanty sings doesn't mean you're not a member of the group...and a very WELCOME one!

Have a happy midwinter holiday season (despite bad memories) and all the best for the coming new year.

Such cogent comments! I'll comment on the conversation tomorrow at The Press Room.

Some of us who were not there this afternoon were happily writing out messages on our stack of Christmas cards. Sigh! Humbug!

Not the largest session, but the pub was quiet so we could sing a few things more difficult in its usual din.

And we had a few voices not usually in attendance...Maine storyteller Lynne Cullen, tavern wench Lynn Feingold, balladeer Debra Cowen, which made up for missing some of the usual suspects.

Hope it wasn't Jeri's Friday migraine that kept her away. My knee was feeling better but I still had my cane which kept clattering to the floor. AND I got princess parking (unlike last night's ordeal.)

More later.

Let's see, I was rather cavalier about writing down who arrived...I hope this list is more or less complete: The crew was me, of course, Emery Hutchins (otherwise known as Hutch), Dianne Lavoie, Dave Nune, Lynne Cullen, Bill Lehrman and Carol Pierson, Lynn Feingold, Peter and Audi Souza and Zinnia, Debra Cowan, Don Hale, and (actually having a meal with friends) Bruce MacIntyre. Jaki was our awesome server.

And we sang...

12. Green Grow the Rushes-O - Dianne Lavoie
13. Children, Go Where I Send Thee - Don Hale

16. Bottle of the Best - Linn Schulz
17. The Trees Are All Bare - Lynn Feingold
18. The Jeannie C. - Dianne Lavoie

22. Blood Red Roses - Bruce MacIntyre
23. Bulgine Run - Peter Souza
24. Agricultural Irish Girl - Lynn Feingold
25. McTavish Is Dead - Dianne Lavoie
26. Cushy McCoy - Linn Schulz (at least I tried -- it's been too long)

37. Black Betty - Dianne Lavoie
38. Jack of Diamonds - Audi Peter Souza

51. The Holly and the Ivy - Audi & Peter
52. Cruising 'Round Yarmouth - Linn Schulz
53. Shine Your Buckles With Brasso - Lynn Feingold
54. Down Below - Linn Schulz (Did I mention I talked to Evan Leonard,
from whom I learned the song, and he said Sidney Carter wrote it...)
Since the Gloucester and other "away" contingent had packed up
to leave and we only had less than ten minutes left anyway, we closed with...
55. Nelson's Prayer - the Company led by Don Hale

If you spot any errors or omissions, please post them!
Happy whatever mid-winter holiday or holidays you choose to celebrate! (I choose all of 'em!)

Thanks Linn,

Say, do you know if Dave reads this? He should learn the custom of bringing CD's to sell.

A delightful session, and they had Smuttynose Robust Porter on tap!!!
#11: "Somerset Gloucestershire Wassail", from a 1960 Kingston Trio record, "The Last Month Of The Year" (as was "Go Where I Send Thee").
I do go back a while (as I said at the session, I'm a pre-war model).
A Merry Merry and a Happy Happy to all!
