Sorry. That was me.

Rather distressing, to say the least.

That suggestion does exactly nothing on the phone I'm using right now.

To the substantive matter. I hope nobody's thinking of erasing him from history as has largely happened to Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris, since he collaborated with a lot of brilliant people in producing a huge number of superb recordings.

No, he needs to be locked up. Like it or not, he's already part of history, and to say otherwise will be a lie. It's not 1984, you know.

(Jack said) "he collaborated with a lot of brilliant people in producing a huge number of superb recordings"

True; but a bit difficult.

On the one hand, I have no intention of throwing away my copy of, in particular, The Bones Of All Men (the rhythm work always makes me grin. It's like reviving 2 different styles of ancient music at the same time).

On the other, I've had it in mind for a long time that he has other stuff that I might want to go look for, and now I'm wondering if I'd feel okay about sending money in his direction.

And, producing a third hand out of nowhere, I'm thinking about the literal meaning of the word "prejudice" - he hasn't had the fair trial yet.

You'd be boycotting hundreds of other people who worked with him.

Not knowing much about the case I suspect that (a) he probably did do it, but (b) he's getting harsher treatment than he would otherwise since this is part of a huge and expensive trawl, and the police expect a return on their investment.

By sheer fluke (not even realizing he was on trial) I bought this in a charity shop last week:

Feast of Fools

(Re: silly me - the title might have been a clue, too, if I'd been looking for one).

(Jack) "You'd be boycotting hundreds of other people who worked with him."

Yes. If "boycott" is the word, it's just a question of what I'd feel easy with. After all, the world's full of people I haven't chosen to push money towards, for reasons that aren't their fault; I just don't have enough money for it to be otherwise. No-one does. Like I said, I don't see it clear and easy either way.

And, yes, it's a circus, we could wonder what's going on behind the scenes, if such cases are being taken more seriously than they have been in the past ... wait & see what it looks like in retrospect, I suppose.

Jack; "Not knowing much about the case I suspect that (a) he probably did do it, but (b) he's getting harsher treatment than he would otherwise since this is part of a huge and expensive trawl, and the police expect a return on their investment."

If you don't know much about the case, then I don't know how you've reached your views. Why do think that he has been harshly treated? And why do you think it's part of a huge and expensive trawl?

The process of bringing Pickett to justice started when a victim who was attacked in 1978, when she was 16, reported him to Suffolk police, who referred her complaint to the City of London force. City of London police arrested Pickett in 2013 and, as a result of media coverage, further victims came forward.

The judge ordered that two further indictments in relation to allegations by two women dating back to the 1970s lie on file. Pickett was cleared of six further counts of indecent assault.

DS Maria Woodall from City of London police said Pickett's access to young women over such a long period of time meant there could be more victims who have yet to come forward. City of London police have asked any other victims of Pickett to contact specially trained detectives on 0800 056 0154.

And not Phil Pickett, double Ivor Novello Award-winning English composer and musician.

He co-founded hit-making pop band Sailor in 1973, but is best known for co-writing and recording Karma Chameleon with Boy George and Culture Club.

Well, Rolf won't be written out of history if I have my way, for he's innocent and the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice. I've got my Support Rolf Harris page in Facebook, if anyone wants to find out more...

I don't know enough about Phil's case to comment, but there's a lot of dodgy stuff going on in these Witch Hunts and folks need to be aware of that...and of the media often reporting total crap and twisting the truth, no longer questioning a damn thing any longer...

As Mark Williams-Thomas, the man who first made the Savile documentary (from which Operation Yewtree was born) said in a recent radio interview, "everyone is fair game now"

He's busy creating Paedophile Paranoia on Twitter, of course, re-vamping his new website and interestingly has wiped all trace from this of how he used to work for SKY (thus, Murdoch)...

He's the man who breaks most of the news of men who have been taken in for questioning and boasted in a Sunday Times interview not that long ago that he now charges £3,000 to £8,000 an HOUR for his talks on Child Protection and Criminology...He's an ex-cop with a somewhat questionable past...who claims to have been a detective, but this is questioned in many circles...

Look deeper in ALL these cases. Yes, some men will be guilty (Rolf's not, no WAY) but many won't be, no matter if a 'guilty' verdict is brought in.

What's going on is deeply shocking...and the part the press are playing in it all is even more shocking.

By the way, the Savile Dunsford allegations have been blown apart by a lawyer who is an ex-Dunsford girl herself. You can find Susanne on her blog which is called 'Anna Raccoon'

Sadly, she's now dying, (cancer) but still writing, just, being helped out by others whom she trusts...a GREAT blog and one that is blowing apart much of what is going on in the UK at present.

And now, I'm sure this post will probably be removed by my usual Mod Stalker who likes to remove many of my posts, but I hope a few of you see it before she zaps it....She's why I hardly ever come to Mudcat now...

Guess the Jake the Paed remix that's popular in the clubs will have to be withdrawn as well.

It's a classic dichotomy - the disconnection between the morally flawed artist and his/her art, and whether one cancels out the other or runs alongside it - and how we deal with it practically.

I also happen to have "The Bones Of All Men" by Pickett, with Richard Thompson, and it's a superb album. Will I still play it? Yes, I will, from time to time - but I will now also be reminded, whenever I play it, of the depressing flaws in human nature.

its weird shit. when I was a guitar teacher I always INSISTED kids had their parents at the lessons. No way I was going to be vulnerable to that sort of thing.

Mind you parents should be able to send their kids off to the Guildhall of Music without worrying about their kids innocence being violated. or any school for that matter.

Its an odd one. Really, I can remember when I was a teacher - there were teachers on the staff, that the kids whispered about - that were rumoured to be crossing the line. In all cases the teachers had wives and families. Obviously the school wasn't keen to open up a can of worms.

the flawed arist - I dunno. Oscar Wilde went out and got rentboys that were up for it, and felt the fury of the law.. Roman Polanski. Errol Flynn....

I have a feeling that in the tragedy of this man and his victims are a a whole raft of problems.

I was pretty gutted to hear the news... shocked. Terrible for the victims, the despicable things he's done. And yes, the dichotomy between this and the delightful music he's been responsible for and collaborated in. It was David Munrow and Pickett (via the Albions)that got me into early music. I can't listen to any of that stuff now without the shadow of what Pickett's done looming over it. A shame that the music and his associates over the years (through no fault of their own)will seem tainted by it. I thought of the 'Jockey to the Fair' dialogue of John Tams and Shirley Collins on 'Son of Morris On' - "I'll tell my mother, yes, that I will, how you've served her daughter" - which assumes a more sinister timbre knowing that Pickett's recorder provides the accompaniment...

Luring and locking young girls in a sound-proof room where there are no witnesses,
and no one outside can hear them scream,
then turning out the lights..
is sinister and despicable in extreme...

This is not the scenario from a lurid 1970s X rated Italian horror movie,
but what Pickett has been convicted for actually enacting in real life..

His musical reputation and his music was his bait.

I won't stop listening in private to Gary Glitter's glam rock hits.

Likewise, it's up to Pickett fans to decide how they react and separate the criminal rapist
from his musical output.

Some folks might even still enjoy looking at prints of Hitler's paintings...

The Guildhall School of Music has a lot to answer for. A family who complained about Pickett attacking their 17-year-old daughter in 1984 were told by the school that she should have her lessons elsewhere as no one else had complained.

In 2013, the director of music at Chetham's school of music in Manchester was jailed for six years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a pupil. The victim killed herself halfway through the trial. She was 48.

Her death prompted a nationwide police investigation after dozens of former pupils from Chetham's and other music schools and conservatoires came forward to accuse music teachers of sexually abusing them or their peers as children or young adults.

An historical sex offence inquiry into singer Sir Cliff Richard has "increased significantly in size" and involves "more than one allegation", police say.

The expansion of the investigation meant no date could be given for when it would be concluded, South Yorkshire Police's chief constable said.

if his records stand let them stand, side by side. Life ain't what we want it to be, what we think it should be, it is what it is. Blot out either aspect and you have an incomplete record.
Where would the Folk world be if we were selective in what we think it should be?

An endless debate on what the subject is?

Oh dear I seem to have shot my argument in its foot.

So - debate on.
