23 Feb 15 - 01:49 PM (#3689184) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: cuckoo verse to wild rover From: Brian Peters I looked at all the versions of Wild Rover that I could find - from England, Scotland, Australia, Canada and Ireland - in the course of researching a paper on the song that was published in the Folk Music Journal last year. I don't recall ever having seen a verse about a cuckoo and, having just checked through most of them, I still can't find it. |

This is about the same as earlier years even though last year he was exceptionally late(May 2014). Oh, by the way, first use of the word cuckoo in a thread title too. (16th Feb last year). |

24 Feb 15 - 02:52 PM (#3689501) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: cuckoo verse to wild rover From: Gurney This traditional verse from a couple of other songs would fit, if you can't find the one you want. The cuckoo is a pretty bird, she sings as she flies She brings us good tidings, she tells us no lies She sucks the small birds eggs to make her voice clear And the more she sings cuckoo, the summer draws near. No relationship to the Wild Rover that I can see, but it scans OK. |
