20 Mar 15 - 11:57 AM (#3695520) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: Musket Or see if someone else gets more votes in the election? If she gets enough votes she represents the constituency. If someone gets more, they do. What an odd thread? Unless someone commits a crime that conviction demands disqualification or does something that makes their position untenable, we let the people decide in a vote. By all means publicise their good and bad points but your post sounds disrespectful to the voters, who will decide. If enough want her, that's tough on those who don't like her and good for those who do. I have no idea myself and like 99.99% of Mudcat readers, not directly affected. If she is your MP, tell her how you feel. |
20 Mar 15 - 12:08 PM (#3695522) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Sorry about the above. I pressed the Go button before I was ready to go. The entire message should have read:- Esther McVey is, many would claim, the most hated and heartless member of the current British parliament. 20 Mar 15 - 12:16 PM (#3695525) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Musket. What a peculiar post. The whole idea is to get those of her constituents who are being hammered by The Wicked Witch of Wirral West (as she is known locally) to get out and use their votes in order to make sure that she will stop hammering them. As for stressing her good points. Why on earth should we do the Tory Party's dirty work for them? That's assuming anyone could find any good points of course. |

20 Mar 15 - 12:50 PM (#3695536) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: Musket Gosh, sorry. I didn't know providing scrutiny on legislation wasn't possible if you are the wicked witch of the West. I doubt that name will affect those who voted for her who might vote for her again. After all, you vote generally for a party rather than a personality. We have a Tory MP who impresses me as a constituency worker, (he has delivered on rural broadband funding from The EU, business development funding that has led to an old airfield nearby that now employs over 2,000 people and lots of other bits. I like him. But I couldn't vote for a party that would try to leave Europe and trust social infrastructure to the private sector. So those who vote for her? Possibly voting for Cameron and Osborn anyway. You missed the boat in getting her deselected by her local party. She rides on the confidence or otherwise of the Conservative manifesto now. The whole idea,as you say, is about the conservatives, not about her. Anybody wanting a conservative government will vote for her despite any motivation put forward using her as the reason. A bit like when we voted for the New Labour ideal by putting red rosettes on donkeys. |

21 Mar 15 - 01:22 AM (#3695652) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: Joe Offer I think it's a pretty good song, as such songs go, and I think we could use more discussion of political songs around here. But it's true that the thread is political and the song is ancillary, so I moved the thread to the non-music section. -Joe- |
21 Mar 15 - 01:53 AM (#3695657) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: Musket I suppose most songs with a view are political in some way or other Joe. Other than the unrequited love ones.... Snag is, a catchy song is one thing, assuming Mudcat is full of those tuned into the same political outlook is another. I have no time whatsoever for the lady in question and highlighting her shortcomings is valid in any arena. But it's another "Fred spills his political hobby into Mudcat " again. A bit like asking us all to boycott Amazon etc. His assumption that whatever his cause of the day is, is shared is one thing. But rather than saying "if you agree" he assumes readers naturally agree. Gets my goat. |
21 Mar 15 - 03:15 PM (#3695784) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: GUEST,Desi C Well, unlike some on this thread I remember when politics had a LOT to do with Folk music and vice versa, and this is as valid a fok song as I've ever heard. This is a truly ignorant evil woman and we need all the helo from any genre to free us from this modern Nazi'ism |
21 Mar 15 - 07:38 PM (#3695812) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: Joe Offer Well, this thread is certainly appropriate in the non-music section, where everything goes - other than mortal combat and personal invective. -Joe- Definition of INVECTIVE: of, relating to, or characterized by insult or abuse ..but feel free to insult politicians you dislike... |
22 Mar 15 - 04:58 AM (#3695863) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: GUEST,Ellen Vannin But it's a good song in a long tradition of political songs in the UK - and political cartoons, political satire etc. |
22 Mar 15 - 11:25 AM (#3695938) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Sorry folks. I wasn't trying to have a row with anyone, except Esther McVey of course. However, there have been one or two threads recently, bemoaning the fact that the political song has gone the way of the dodo. So I thought people would be glad to know that the political song is alive and well and living on Merseyside. As for suggestions that this thread should be below the line, I cannot see the logic of this. Since when has Mudcat confined itself to folk music? I for one get a little fed up with people asking what's your favorite Frank Sinatra/Beatles/Dolly Parton song, or has anyone got the chords to Killing Me Softly, or whatever. While I agree that Sack Esther is not a folksong, neither are the compositions of Aunt Molly Jackson, Woody Guthrie, Jock Purdom or Ewan MacColl, to name but a few. Yet these are all perfectly acceptable topics for discussion - above the line. Finally there's the question of Musket. (Thinks. Oh God, what are we going to do with him?) The best advice I can give is to just ignore him. At least while he's attacking me, he's not kicking the shit out of anyone else. |
22 Mar 15 - 11:44 AM (#3695941) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: GUEST What an unpleasant and spiteful thread this is. Typical of intellectually incompetent lefties in that it tries to whip up negative emotions and ignores any attempt at logic or truth. |
22 Mar 15 - 11:52 AM (#3695945) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: GUEST,(Not the 11.44 one) I'm always puzzled by just how spiteful and intolerant 'lefties' are - if you don't share their particular view of the world you're clearly a fascist or just plain evil. More basically, if you don't think as they do, there's clearly something wrong with you.... |

23 Mar 15 - 02:46 AM (#3696073) Subject: RE: Sack Esther McVey From: Musket Whilst ever the likes of Fred are shouting, incompetent and nasty elements within the Tory party start to look credible to voters. Thanks for the vote of confidence Fred but two things. 1. It's you trying to ram an opinion down throats of a broad church of opinions here and 2. I am a Labour voting normal person, so your automatic reaction to those who question your crusades is at the very least rather funny. By all means have your radical conscience and stand outside buildings drawing attention to injustice but don't assume empathy when the only thing in common here is a love of a wide musical genre. If you'll excuse me, the door bell. Hopefully the Amazon delivery of guitar strings. |
