BS: Don't put acid in your eye

...Mrs Worthington.

Seriously though, it is not a good idea. I have been putting drops in my eyes for conjunctivitis for about a week. Monday morning, half asleep, picked up a very similar phial that contained dilute salicylic acid and put that in my eye instead!

Yesterday the hospital confirmed that there had been no long term damage so I was very lucky, but also very aware of how it could have ended.

Keep safe out there and, whatever you are doing, stay vigilant!

That was my very first word when I realised, Joe! Followed by one or two slightly less savoury ones:-)

Lesson learned-keep your acid (and schrooms) out of easy reach.

On second thought, maybe you could behefit from this new drug?

I'll have some of what Frogprince is on :-)

As long as I don't put it in my eyes!

Incidentally, did you hear about the new recreational drug in Yorkshire that you rub into your mouth?

E by gum...

Geez, Dave......don't do that......Himself once used up my hairspray thinking it was underarm deodorant, but acid in the eye is much worse!

Vitamin C

aka "ascorbic acid"

In a very, VERY weak solution....has provided a "cure" to my previous issues with GPC. A shot-glass makes a fine container for the "wash."

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I'm glad you're okay, Dave. Reminds me of one fuzzy night when I reached for the Prep H and grabbed the Ben Gay by mistake. Only time I ever hit high C.

WHY do you keep a bottle of liquid asprin (aka salicylic acid) around?

WHY do you have conjunctivitis?

What have you done to prevent a re-peat?

I once sniffed deeply of a cleaning rag soaked in industrial-strength ammonia. I ran from the room, my throat burning and my eyes watering, for the Coke machine. Fortunately for me, it was broken and gave me a cup of carbonated water -- which was what I needed to offset the ammonia.

Don't do that, either!

And I no longer sniff cleaning rags to find out what's on them.

I have a folkie friend Carol who did the same thing with super glue and did both eyes.
No harm done, but she lived alone and had to call an ambulance by touch.

Jacqui C, have I remembered that right?

Salicylic acid in a 10% solution is used to peel a layer of skin. My daughter used it to lessen the effect of scaring but it didn't work very well. The doctor did say it is quite effective in removing the top layer of the cornea though! I guess the conjunctivitis was caused by some minor irritation.

I nearly did it once. I was bored in a chemistry lesson and as I'd done before started tipping things from one test tube to another to see what colours things turned. This time round I think tipped some concentrated sulphuric acid (it wasn't usually on the bench but it was in by breif time of A level chemistry before dropping out of school and I think we were doing esters) into something.

It went off with a bang and something splashed in my face. The teacher took some time washing my face and eyes with water and as it turned out, aside from the teacher hoping I'd learned a lesson not to be so stupid in future, I got away with my messing around.

---
The most painful eye experience I had came after playing with an arc welder - I looked. Sort of felt like someone's thrown sand in your eyes and is rubbing it in. My mother who was a phisiotherapist who had once done something similar to herself with UV light (IIRC couldn't find her googles and opted to treat someone without her protection) reckoned the time between my exposure and reaction wasn't too bad but even after the initial pain died down, my eyes were sore for a couple of days.

What about boric acid? Boric acid solution used to be pretty standard as an eyewash. I've always been afraid to try it.

I almost did something like that one day. I thought I had reached for eye drops, but in my hand I had the solution for cleaning wax out of the ears.

I guess we should keep medication for the eyes in a separate place from all other kinds. And it wouldn't hurt to put some tape on the bottle and draw a big eye on it.

I'm glad your eyes are going to be okay, Dave.

Vincent Price discovered that when someone mixed up his eye wash with sulfuric acid - forget the movie.

So sorry.

Did you drop the acid?

Dropping acid and listening to a George Hamilton the 4th album, or to an 8 track stuck on Charlie Pride' s "The Snakes Crawl at Night" song - now that would be a real scary flashback.

Funnily enough the nurse at the eye hospital said that had happened to her. She passed what she thought were eye drops to her daughter but it turned out to be ear drops!

Dropping acid. Yes, well, the less said about that the better but I still remember the rocket that was really the clock tower on Swinton town hall refusing to take me to the moon...

I told Rock to open the fuel valve. He said okay. He messed up. I cut the line to the gas tank. I got out from under the truck, got on my knees and I heard him run for the garden hose and run back. He said, "FUCK!" I heard him run back to turn on the hose bib and run back. He sprayed me and said, "FUCK!" He turned the nozzle to a gentle spray and washed out my eyes. Yes, it was very painful. No, I didn't kick his ass... I couldn't see well enough to do so.

I burned my corneas....with a blast oven for molten glass.

Every pain since... is measured on a one to ten scale...when asked by a doctor:
COMPOUND Fractor, right hand = 6
Acute appendix = 7
Burnt cornea = 10

GPC Is pretty awful....but two washes with vitamin C produces a cure overnight.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

an ophthalmologist has explain why straight pool chlorine is more dangerous to the eye than a splash of pool acid.

Just an update - Seems to be getting better by the day. Preservative free Chloramphenicol and Steroids are doing a great job. Interestingly, Garg, Fusidic Acid also seems to be prescribed for conjunctivitis so, as you rightly point out, not all acids are bad!
