From: Will Fly I used to enjoy a luxurious, gorgeous Havana cigar - usually a Cohiba - and a Mojita in the Bar Havana in Brighton (Hove actually), prior to doing a gig in the nearby Lion & Lobster of a Friday evening. Then the owner of the Bar Havana upped stakes and went back to Cuba, and the no-smoking ban in pubs put paid to my occasional Cuban cigar. Alles is weg, weg, weg. Still, I've saved a shedload of money (Cohibas were around a tenner a go at that time) and probably done my throat a power of good! |

Probably the height of poor taste but I enjoyed White Owl, Old Port and King Edwards. Of the smaller ones Mehari Sweet Orient were my favourites. |

From: Ed T Many of the Cuban cigar company owners, in exile, began their operations in Dominican Republic in the 60's-70s, which had similar growing conditions. Sone also registered their cigar brands in the USA and internationaly. Thispresented problems for cuban government cigar exporters, who attempted to market the same brands-that they did not actually own. I believe some of the brands you mentioned were from former Cubans living in Miami, Tampa and Dominica. Cuban cigars sent down hill for a few reasons. The first was the shade-grown outside wrappers, which were primarily externally sourced (one source wad the USA) . They attempted to source them locally, with varied results, as it was a big learning curve. The second was the huge growth in cigar popularity near the turn of the centuary. Cuba pumped out huge numbers of cigars to feed needed capital. The result was lower quality, as inferior quality leaves and curing processes were used and less experienced hand rollers were permitted.A concerned veteran Cuban cigar roller once told me that the same cigars were branded with a variety of labels to increase production of the higer priced cigars. Qualith control became the big elephant in the room that was never discussed with the outside. The quality never recovered. |
