Hi Mudcatters
You were very helpful when I last needed a song for a camp, French beautician to sing in the pantomime "Cinderella". Now I need something funny to sing that has a colour in the title for a concert! Please give it a thought - and thanks in advance
Chris Peacock

Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. And it has the added advantage of a very singable chorus, with a nice "One-two-three-four, stick around, I'll tell you more" run up to it.

...and "bikini" is a song that goes over with all audiences, as does Sheb Wooley's "The Purple People Eater."

Well, sort of.

Doc Watson's "Brown's Ferry Blues" has both brown and blue in the title, but doesn't revolve around the colors. Additionally, it has some funny little quips about life.

"The Green Door," while not really a folk song, is about a green door.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer (also not a folk song, really) is a song sung happily by the Beatles about a triple homicide. With a hammer.

Panama Red is perhaps the best song I've offered yet. A country-rock song by NRPS.

Summertime Blues is another song like Brown's Ferry Blues. But it's rockabilly.

White Lightning, by George Jones, can be funny in some parts.

That's it.

"Brown Boots" is also, surely, not a song but a monologue by Weston & Lee, notably performed by Stanley Holloway -- or is there also a song of that name unknown to me?

& tho Little Boxes lists colours of the eponymous artefacts, they do not occur in the title, as specified in the thread-subject.

MGM, you are right about the title of Little Boxes not containing the colours, but if the point is to get an audience to sing about colours it could be a contender.

I first came across Brown Boots as sung/performed by the wonderful Cosmotheka.

Performed it with a bucket that bore the message "For the Sick".

The Brown And The Yellow Ale -- which some singer once misheard as The Brown & Yellow Earl, & wrote a wonderfully point-missing sleevenote about the historical and heraldic & symbolic significance of the colours in the supposed earl's escutcheon. It is in fact a mock-pathetic song about a man with an unfaithful wife, ending with the IMO charming last verse

If it wasn't that my own dear mother was a woman
(Oh the brown and the yellow ale)
I could tell you many more fine songs about the women
(Oh oh love of my heart)

The ales which form the ongoing burden being presumably intended for him to drown his cuckolded sorrows in!

Good versions on youtube by Luke Kelly & Dominic Behan.

n fact, I find that is the version which has mistakenly got into the DT, together with that absurd note It isn't right [listen to those versions I cite above], and should be emended.

Since the original poster mentioned Cinderella, when I was a child, we used to do a chant while jumping rope that went "Cinderella, dressed in yella, went downtown to catch a fella" with the subsequent verses improvised by the kid shouting it out.

Anyway, as far as songs with colors in the title, I don't think anybody has mentioned "Blue Suede Shoes" ... "Crimson and Clover" ... "Green Tambourine" ... "Purple Haze" ... or "Sweet Georgia Brown" (Harlem Globetrotters classic theme song).

I heard this many years ago at a house concert by Roy Harris. He used it as a kind of "Get your attention song" to open a concert. When he stopped traveling over here, I adopted it.
The only title I know it as is the same as the chorus:
It is half sung, half bellowed

"There was an old woman, she kept fat hogs,
She made plum puddings-they poisoned the dogs,
They were black, white, yellow and green.

Cho: "Black, white, yellow and green,
The rarest plum puddings you ever have seen.
The were black, white, yellow and green.

She took them a threw them into a pot,
And boiled them till they were steaming hot,
They were black, white, yellow and green.

Cho:"Black, white, yellow and green,
The rarest plum puddings you ever have seen.
They were black, while, yellow and green.

She baked them till they were blazing red,
The one was like leather, the other like lead.
They were black, white, yellow and green.
Cho.

She took out a pin and pricked their skins,
The gravy ran out and the maggots ran in.
They were black, white, yellow and green.

Cho:

She took them a put them down on the floor,
Each took to its feet and ran out of the door.
They were black, white, yellow and green.

Cho:

She took them and put them up on a shelf...
If you want any more, you can sing it yourself! (or "help yourself)
They were black, white, yellow and green.

Cho:Black, white, yellow and green,
The rarest plum puddings you ever have seen.
The were black, white, yellow and greeeeenn!

Here is a link, but I'll guarantee the tune Roy used was not that 'tinkley'. https://www.8notes.com/scores/3605.asp
