Good new song by Declan O'Rourke; I can't make out all the words.
Anyone got them?

Can you post what you have so far, Michael? Then we can work on the rest of it together.

Here's what I have:

In Dublin town one Easter morn a hundred years ago
The Rebels led a rising from the city's GPO
Brave heroes and their enemies fell, civilians in between
And among the dead and fallen were the children of '16

Those children of the tenement slums who daily with their pals
A brazen wild brigade sprang up between the two canals
With their handcarts over cobblestone they rattled skid (?) and tore (?)
Barefooted as they scavenged through the crossfire and the gore

A war zone of the capital the bombs and shelling made
And snipers' bullets pierced and whipped ???? haze
There was fighting from the union to the mill above the green
And it made a great excitement for the children of '16

Six days have bid the Rebels pay a grave and bloody toll
But through their blood and martyrdom Republic soon was born
High aloft its streets and buildings now their names can e'er be seen
But still missing from the pages are the children of '16

Nor Pearse, nor Clarke, McDonagh or the Connolly we know
Would rest were they remembered on a pedestal alone
And are they not the fathers of our nation proud and free
And our sisters and our brothers then the children of '16

I'd appreciate any help filling in the missing spots.

Line 7 sounds fine as is

Line 10 sounds like 'the sulphured (sulfured) April haze'

Thanks for that, Guest #. Line 10 makes sense to me, 7 not so much.

'they rattled, skid and tore' is what I'm hearing Michael. Perhaps the confusion is the 'skid' used where North Americans might use skidded (which of course doesn't scan). However, I expect you'll have many UK/Irish ears on it in a few hours so you'll not have long to wait. Darned good song btw.

The Irish contingent seems not to be interested...

Asking our resident Irish again: Where would "the union" and "the mill above the green" have been located?

Boland's Mill and the South Dublin Union Workhouse were sites in Dublin City occupied by the rebels during the Rising. I'll chase up details later.

Rattled, skid and tore. Meaning. if I can explain.. The old hand carts had wooden wheels with metal outer rims and were fixed very loosly to a metal axle, so they "rasttled" when moved, and "Skid" when moved fast around a bend because of the metal rimmed wheel, and tear or "tore" is a slang verb for run fast or move fast. Example.. He tore down the road at some speed. Hope this helps
