The song is from a John McCutcheon CD. It explain more or less she could have chosen a man who would have given her a life of riches ease but she chose me. In addition to the lyrics, what is the name of the song and if possible the album?

Thank you for trtying,

Glen Pertz

Hi, Glen -

The first thing that came to mind was the What It's Like album. There's a song there called "Cup of Coffee" that may be the one you seek.

CUP OF COFFEE
(John McCutcheon)

Standing barefoot in the darkness, one hand upon the door
I turn to look just one last time, like a thousand times before
To where you're sleeping there without me, your breasts rise and gently fall
Then I turn and slip so silent to the hall

CHORUS:

It's a cup of coffee down the road
A heavy heart and a heavy load
The lines, the lights, the red-eyed nights
The troubles I can't lose
Just pulling loads and pulling time
In younger days would suit me fine
But now the aches, the age, the burning rage
Lie smoldering like a fuse

I remember at the union hall, back at Christmas '63
How I lied that I could waltz just to hold you close to me
It was "Midnight on the Waters" and daylight in your arms
Now, 25 years later, I'm still a prisoner of your charms

CHORUS

Voices on the radio, only help me pass the time
They got foolish cares I pray I'll never know
At some roadside phonebooth I fumble my last dime
I got eighteen wheels and a thousand miles to go

Now your hair is spun to silver and mine is nearly gone
And the children that I hardly know are grown up and moved on
Out here it's so damn lonesome that I don't know what to do
My heart stretched like a highway home to you

CHORUS

Another possibility:

LAST FIRST KISS
(John McCutcheon & Steve Seskin)

Sunday morning, coffee's on
The kids are gone
I'm thinking of that moment when
All you had to do was speak
My knees went weak
Yeah, I'm twenty-two years old again

Chorus

You were my last first kiss
I never imagined love could be like this
You are the woman I still can't resist
You were my last first kiss

That Friday night at your front gate
It was getting late
A long, slow walk home from the dance
You said you had a real nice time
Slipped your hand in mine
I closed my eyes and took a chance

Chorus

Been to heaven
Been through hell
Since I gave you that ring
Now heaven knows
I wouldn't change a thing

Chorus

Sunday morning, coffee's on
The kids are gone
I'm thinking what a ride it's been
Still all you have to do is speak
My knees go weak
I'm twenty-two years old again

I've had a good time looking through John's lyrics, but I don't know for sure if I found the one you seek. The one that keeps popping into my head is not by John McCutcheon. It's "Forty-Five Years" by Stan Rogers.

Take a look through John's lyrics here:

If you find your song, please post it here so we'll know, too.

I do not remember the name of the song. John sings about a woman who could have had a life of ease and luxury but she chose him. Its one of my favorite love songs because it really relates to my engagement to Carol.

I don't suppose this is it, but it's a good song.

FRIEND AND COMPANION
(Si Kahn)

for Elizabeth Kamarck Minnich

I knew you were different
Right from the start
There was something about you
That captured my heart
I still remember
How quickly it happened
You are my lover
My friend and companion

Friend and companion
Lover and friend
Over and over
And over again
Who could imagine
That women and men
Could be such companions
Lovers and friends

We were so young then
Who could have known
We'd meet again
After wandering alone
All of those years
Who could have imagined
A lover could be
Such a friend and companion

Now we are older
Together at last
Freed from the demons
That haunted our past
Long as I live
I know I'll be standing
Right here beside you
My friend and companion

USED TO BE
(John McCutcheon)

Words & music by John McCutcheon & Steve Seskin

John: vocal & guitar
Jon: piano
JT: bass
Pete: electric guitar
Jos: drums

Used to be
I could work from dawn to dusk
The man who get the job done every time
Used to be
I lived out on the edge
I took a lot of chances, that was fine
Now a days
I can't do that anymore
I get scared and I get sore
Life ain't nothing like it was before

I don't wanna go back in time
When I look at this life of mine
I'm thankful for every single day
The past can do a number on you
But I've come to believe it's true
That my best years are still ahead of me
And there's no future in how it used to be

Used to be
There was no night too long
We were two young lovers hungry for the dark
You and me
We built a world together
And there were times the whole thing almost fell apart
Now a days
That seems so long ago
We take things kind of slow
It's a different kind of love we've come to know

I don't wanna go back in time
When I look at this love I find
I am thankful for every single day
Forgive me if I speak for you
But I think you believe it too
That best years are still ahead for you and me
And there's no future in how it used to be

Subject: ADD: This Time of Year (McCutcheon)
From: Joe Offer

I've gone through all of McCutcheon's songs twice, looking for love songs that might fit your specifications, Glen. I've found and posted some terrific songs, but I don't know if I've found what you're looking for. This is the last one, one that strikes me particularly. Even if I didn't find the right song, I've had a good time exploring.

THIS TIME OF YEAR
(John McCutcheon)

And once again this time of year the willow's first to show
I've often seen her yellowed green while still the maples flow
Birds come alive on every limb, the rivers test their banks
And the redbud and the dogwood brightly spread their wings in thanks
And the night are cool and clear this time of year

And once again this time of year my plow will split the ground
And leave the blackened guts of earth straight-furrowed up and down
The skeletons of last year's corn with all the sticks and stones
I buried under just this morn, the last of winter's bones
And we'll start again from here this time of year

Out on the horizon there a thunderhead is blowing
If the wind is right sometime tonight she'll quench my summer's seed
And in another month this ground will be alive and growing
And we'll start the season's struggle with the weather and the weed
But for now this land is clean and still, new fencelines wrap her 'round
But my dreams have no horizonlines, this promise knows no bounds
And, Love, it's good to feel you near this time of year

For there's a change comes in the weather
There's a change comes in the sea
There's a change comes in the land
And there's a change comes over me
With the changes of the season now that everything is new
But there isn't any change in my love for you

And once again this time of year here at the workday's end
The night wind stirs the curtains, the moon soft upon your skin
The winter's quilt all stowed away while tangled in the covers
We plow, once more, familiar ground, two old and seasoned lovers
And one heart is all I hear this time of year
