2015 Obit: Pete Betts (Betsy)

21 Sep 15 - 03:51 PM (#3738880)
Subject: Pete Betts (UK) in hospital
From: nutty

Just read on Facebook that Pete Betts has had a severe stroke. Folkies will knpw Pete as Vin Garbutts best buddy and also the composer of "They Don't Write Them like that Anymore". This apparently happened yesterday so it's too soon to know what the outcome will be but I'll keep posting whenever I hear more news.

Quite simply, one of the funniest and friendliest people I've met in all my years on the folk scene. Rest in peace, Pete, and deepest condolences to his family. The folk scene is a lot poorer today.

My heart goes out to Pete; I survived a severe stroke, and it kept me in hospital for a year. But I was one of the lucky ones; there are many others, including this lovely man, who do not make it. Rest in peace, Pete.

I for one will miss him, he was a regular to a local session
here on Teesside, was only playing and talking with him last week.

The world will be a drearier place without him, with his lighthearted but straight to the point banter!!
Personally I think he was definitely underrated as a singer/songwriter,
local clubs rarely gave him a guest spot, here is an interesting acticle you will find amusing....

I last saw him at Saltburn Festival in August, he was on good form, I will miss him. He gave me a right bollocking for posting r.i.p. ron angel, and not using capitals.
he was a fine songwriter and a great character. R.I,P.

So sad, so very, very sad, Pete has gone way before his time.

So many years with so many memories of so many mutual insults giving rise to so many laughs and leaving us with so many stories that we continue to recall so many times - but so cruel that we had no opportunity so say our last goodbye.

Sincere condolences to Faith, Jo and Chris - Pete was a rare gem never to be forgotten. Tom Wilson & The Family

I have known Pete since I came onto the folk scene, 30yrs ago, but only became good friends the last 3yrs of his life.
I will dearly miss Pete, he was a regular at the weekly session we hold at the Top House, Marske.
He would regularly txt me, to see if I was going, and I to him. For I knew if Pete was going, it was gunna be a great night, and it always was!
The world has now become a drearier place.
Personally I think he was underrated as a singer/songwriter, doing very few guest spots at local clubs.
What a lot of people did'nt realise, was how adept he was with the guitar, he had a natural ability to interpret chord progression, with accompaniment, be it reels/jigs/polkas or a slow air.
l was privaleged to play with him, on the few gigs we did together.

RIP Pete, until we meet again, Len

I've been out of the folk scene for many years but while reminiscing, down the super highway, I discovered it has been six years since Pete passed away.
I would just like to say to his nearest and dearest how Pete would light up our nights at the Inverness folk song club with his presence and professionalism, what a breath of fresh air Pete was.
I always thought his local clubs were blessed to have such a lovely talented funny guy at singers nights. He usually finished his spot by special request, from all of us with 'They don't write like that any more'
My old friend, you were one of the good guys. On behalf of all his friends at Inverness RIP Pete. john c.

I was resident singer at Eston Folk Club in 1964 in a duo with Alan Smith. Not because we were super talented but we were a reliable fixture to start off the nights. The 'names' of that era were Vin Garbutt and his friend Pete Betts. I recall a brilliant song called The Critic I believe that Pete had written and would dearly love to locate it. Either a recording or just the lyric. I run a website on Facebook called FAMELESS FIVE. If you can help with either please send it to that site. Thanks, Louis Spence
