Scotland's newest recognized language

Sign language (BSL) has been given the status of a recognized indigenous language of Scotland:

This is not about empty grandstanding, it's about the long term. Most of us won't notice, but it will make a big difference to a small number of people.

Interesting. And it's unrelated to American Sign Language, which is secretly French.

That makes good sense (the idea, not the complicated regulation stuff)

And thanks, Jack, for translating autochthonous.

Good.
as to Mrzzy's point: true. But a deaf French person cannot communicate [in FSL] with a Canadian or American fluent in ASL. It's actually quite open about its French roots ~ the degree-granting Gallaudet University in Washington DC is named for the deaf teacher of the deaf from Paris.   British deaf users of BSL can't conveniently or easily chat with Canadian deaf folk, even by fingerspelling [different manual alphabets]. And LSQ is as far from FSL as Quebec French is from Parisian.
This is good news for deaf Scots who prefer manual communication.
keep signing + singing

sign language is a very good way of international communication and should be used more, and i am not referring to the two fingered salute.
