Speaking for the trio would just like to say thank you to Wallasey Folk club for having us last night as our second shake down booking.
We felt warmly welcomed and hope that you enjoyed the night as much as we did. You joined in well!
Anyone curious to see us will find us at the Derby Gaol on Thursday this week.

Derby Gaol is a folk club I should point out, it's not a result of the standard of our playing.... I mean we did get offered the gig... I mean .... I'll get my coat....

We had a really enjoyable evening at Derby, I'd never been there before. Lots of interesting history.

Someone sang "Joe Hill" which was nicely appropriate for the date.

We were well received so hope to be invited back some time, good feel to the event.

Search under Caffrey/McGurk/Madge and you should find them if you are interested.

We are at the Liverpool Shanty festival today for a second day, three spots, one at the Salt House Quay stage at 11:45, then two more in the Baltic Fleet.

We have CDs to sell, they arrived on Friday!

Would have posted earlier but I've just returned late on Friday from Whitby week.

Happy with how we did at Liverpool, despite me breaking a concertina hand strap just we started a song in the last set. Managed to continue by changing to alternative concertinas and playing in alternative octaves!
New strap made and fitted this evening.

Tomorrow (bank holiday Monday) we have a 30 minute spot at the festivities at Botany Bay, near Chorley, Lancashire.
To find out the history of why this is called Botany Bay seeing as it is on the Leeds Liverpool canal consult Sid Calderbank!

Following an accident Vic Gammon is unable to perform at the Barlow tomorrow, 15th June we shall be standing in. We are assured that Vic is OK but unable to come over.

Details:
"Sadly, Vic Gammon is not able to join us tomorrow night at The Barlow, Edgworth, Friday, 15 June.

However, we are very fortunate that Nick Caffrey, Ed McGurk and Robin Madge are able to step in at short notice as our main guests. They are well known in the North West and judging from the reviews are rapidly gaining an excellent nationwide reputation for quality singing and musicianship. Their debut CD as a trio, "Like Minds" has a great blend of traditional and contemporary material.

The website, caffreymcgurk.blogspot.co.uk , rightly describes them as:

"This popular trio continues to explore the delights of traditional and contemporary folksong.
With their good humour and informed understanding of the song subjects, they instil their particular flare for harmony and enthusiastic performance making each song a joy to hear. Nick, Ed and Robin are solo singers in their own right adding variety and pleasure to each performance."

"True English Folk singing, in my humble opinion, doesn't come much better than this." - Keith Kendrick

Our support act at 8pm is local singer, guitarist Ken Pearson.

It will be a great night to enjoy with plenty of opportunities to join in with your instruments from 7.45pm and singing thereafter.
Entrance is £10 and you can pay on the door."

Post Code is BL7 0AP

Thanks, Dick. It must have just been the club going for longest in the same place. From Topic's own web site -

The Bridge Folk Club in Newcastle was founded by Louis Killen and Johnny Handle in 1958, putting it in the same sort of ball-park era as the Topic. Its claim to longevity fame is that it has been in just one venue all its existence - apart from a 6-month gap for refurbishment of the pub - which the Topic certainly can't claim.

Just out of interest and keeping the thread afloat :-)

Nick Caffrey has been using his time during Covid lockdowns to do some research on some traditional folk songs and is now revealing the results of his studies in a series of podcasts, being released one per week.

The series starts with "Polly Vaughan" and continues with "Banks of green willow", "The cruel mother" and "Bold fisherman".
