Hi John,

These instruments are normally reasonably expensive. What sort of price are you looking for.

Trust all is well at the Top O' Coom

Hi. I tried your link to see the hurdy gurdy, but FB is not allowing me to view. Here's a link to the makers' site:

Good luck to you in finding the right buyer.

Well, it might not be a "for sale site," but it's a music site - and certainly a good place to let people know about folk instruments for sale.

Love the Hurdy Gurdy. Wish someone was selling it in USA.
It would cost a small (or large) :-) fortune to have an instrument like that shipped from Ireland to USA.

Hi Lin I think you are probably right. We bought the gurdy in Dublin and were able to bring it down to our place in South west Ireland in the car. Don't know if I would trust it to shippers!! we were told that there are only 6 gurdys in Ireland and Marie has 2 of them. When she plays, I normally accompany her on the Northumbrian smallpipes, and they sound great together. Good luck John. not sure where you are in US but we have a great friend in Ventura California. Michael Jay who has a band called the Mighty Cash Cats. He tours with them and has even been here to play in south west Ireland. A great Guy.

To freespiritceoll:

Just wanted to ask you about your friend in Ventura. I am approximately about 3 hours from that area. Does he play all over Southern, California?
Is the Hurdy Gurdy a difficult instrument to learn to play for a complete beginner?
I first heard the hurdy gurdy when I was in London during the 1980's and heard it being played in a folk club there. I just loved the sound of this beautiful instrument. What is the lowest price you have seen this instrument priced at? Is it risky to buy a 2nd hand one? Thanks.

Hi Lin his name is Michael Jay, and the band is called the Mighty Cash Cats. He tours all over the country and internationally, Israel, France Ireland and UK. If you just google his name on facebook, you should find all the info. he is dedicated to keeping the music of Johnny Cash and June Carter alive, and also gives talks at Schools libraries etc. He is a great guy, and if you get a chance to see him, please send our best from John & Marie In Ireland. As to the gurdy, our best advice would be to try and find someone who plays one and talk to them about your options. They are a friendly bunch and will happily share info with you. Try and have a play on one if possible, before you commit yourself to the investment, as they are not cheap, and you don't want to end up with the wrong instrument. Some of the cheapest ones are more suitable for hanging on the wall rather than playing! our facebook page is at https://www.facebook.com/john.corteen.1
And you will find some video of Marie playing the gurdy in some Irish sessions. Good luck and enjoy the music. All the best John
