Tune Req: While shepherds watched: Crowle

As we know, there are LOTS of tunes for 'While Shepherds Watched'. While at a concert last night I heard a version called 'Crowle' which is set in a minor key and was a 19th setting Google, youtube and VWML have so far not taken me much further. Can anyone tell me more, especially where to find it?

I could be wrong of course, but if there is a Crowle version from Crowle on The Isle of Axholme, North Lincolnshire, I might have heard of it. Indeed, it would have an airing at carol singing sessions hereabouts.

The "Ilkley Moor" tune, as popularised in the Sheffield carols does get sung though.

I'd be fascinated to find it was a local tune all the same. Try pm'ing Squeezebox John. He lives on the outskirts of Crowle and collects traditional tunes.

That's sounds very close, BillE; quite likely it is the source, thanks.

He is Gerry. He pops up on the Ep'th thread from time to time and we have been delighted to have had a return to form at recent folk club nights. His accordion and concertina tunes have been a joy. (Hence knowing his Mudcat name as well as my good friend John.)

I assume that's a pint I owe him.

I.

I was with the aforesaid at the Martin Simpson gig last Friday.

I had got it into my head that we had already met? Maybe not then. I'm a fairly anonymous quiet chap at the best of times. 👼

I don't bother logging in these days so if you can post the dates of your sessions I will try hard to get to one. It is exactly 13.6 miles to Ashby, or at least to Rustys Bikes. I bought one and cycled home not a million years ago. The Missus was impressed till she noticed I had bought an electric one.

Thinking on Gerry. Get thee'sen to The Wheatsheaf in Belton this Wednesday? We have a fairly decent session once a fortnight (alternating with Red Lion at Epworth.) A second banjo might keep up with the volume of a certain set of uilleann pipes...

(Am I endorsing banjos? Must go and lie down for an hour. Eat less cheese late at night, ear drops perhaps..)

I believe you're looking for the tune name "Crowley", not "Crowle". You can find info and a scan at the Hymns and Carols of Christmas site; specifically look for the second setting in Ralph Dunstan, The Cornish Song Book:

What an interesting collection Codger. Particularly the 'While Shepherds - Old' with its Zadoc connection. I stumbled on Crowle earlier quite by chance so I can't guess which one DMcG was seeking.

It might help to know where he heard it sung?

In this previous thread, I posted info on, if I recall, over fifty settings for "While shepherds watched". I ran across quite a few more, mostly from the West Gallery tradition.

Ai heard it sung by "The Madding Crowd" who sing west gallery and similar, at their Christmas performance in Twyford near Westminster. The programme says 'Crowle'. However I do know one of the members socially so I may be able to borrow their music sometime over the Christmas break

The tune is known as Crowle/Crowley and, particularly in New England, Bromsgrove/Broomsgrove.
