Review: Early Ballads in Ireland 1968-85 new CD

Subject: Review: Early Ballads in Ireland 1968-85 new CDs
From: Jim Carroll

Last Friday 11th December, saw the re-launch of 'Early Ballads in Ireland 1968-1985', which was first issued as a cassette, compiled by Tom Munnelly and Hugh Shields, in 1985.
This double CD ranks high among the most important and enjoyable albums of traditional ballads from source singers ever issued, in my opinion.
The two CDs (vol 1 – The North, vol 2 – The South) comprise 20 superb Child ballads, among which are several rarities, including Johnny Scott, (Ch 99), Knight William (Ch 74), The Sweet Viledee (Ch 14), Lord Abore/Obore (Ch 87) and The Holland Handkerchief (Ch 272).
Also included are some excellent versions of old favourites, such as Joe Holmes's Dark Eyed Gypsy (Ch 200), Corney McDaid's False Lover John (Ch 4), Tom Lenihan's Lord Levett (Ch 75), Elizabeth Jeffrey's Rosemary Lane (Child 2) and the delightful There Was a Shepherd Boy (Ch 122) from John Campbell of County Cavan.
Several of the items are the only Irish versions of Child Ballads ever to have been discovered.
The set, which is handsomely presented in a library-sized case with a 40 page booklet of texts, information on performers and some photographs, can be ordered from An Góilin Singers Club www.goilin.com in Dublin, who are to be congratulated for their excellent work in putting this long-unavailable and important album back into circulation

Richard, I can verify that they are all available in the places I mentioned as I'm the one who gave them to them for sale. Due to Christmas and New Year holidays etc. perhaps there may be a delay in getting up on websites.

I think some of the sites have now added the CD to their lists, but some of them only change their catalogues occasionally. An email to any of them would sort things out, but the CD is well worth getting. I had a copy of the old cassette issue but I'm still definitely buying the CD. Well done to all involved in getting it back in circulation.

Hi Matthew,

Jerry O'Reilly did most of the heavy lifting, and Rosie Davis did a lot of the work on design and layout. It's a great job and well worth having.

If any Mudcatter desires a copy just PM me and I'll try to organise to get one to you.

If I go to Claddagh's website and search for "early ballads in Ireland," I get over 700 results, none of which seem to be the one I'm looking for.

I'm in the US.

I finally found it available for mail order here:

http://www.veteran.co.uk/

Just FYI - I got all the way through the PayPal checkout process and then got an error message, but apparently it did go through after a few minutes.

:-)

Hi Kim

It's referenced in the January acquisitions at ITMA, alright - but not available online, of course.

Looks like Claddagh website is not up to date... Search engine a bit crude, mind you.

Fergus and An Góilín will, of course, look after you as necessary!

Just got to read that review. Very comprehensive, forensic and fair. Makes me proud to have played as small part as one of the team from An Góilín Traditional Singers' Club that brought it to the public's attention by reissuing it as a double CD. Well worth the cost of just ten euro.

It is a very good review to read, and if I hadn't already bought the CD, I'd be off to buy it straightaway!
The review by Brian Peters on Musical Traditions really does explain fully why this is such an important collection of ballad performances, and Brian brings a lot of insight into what these wonderful singers are doing.
NB I got the CD from Veteran Mail Order
Thanks to Fergus and everyone at An Góilín for making this reissue happen.

Me too, Kevin. I'd really have liked a copy, but I was forced to abandon my quest a few years ago after fruitless searching. So I tried Veteran today, and it's listed on the "Irish Stall" page under Various Artistes - but when clicking that blue link it takes you back to the main Irish CDs page where this title does NOT appear anywhere! Curious.
Any help appreciated...
