BBC Radio 4 "PM" New Year's Eve:-

Salvation through the cello playing - in Auschwitz and Bagdhad.

Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was saved from the gas chambers in Auschwitz due to her cello playing. Karim Wasfi played his cello in the street following a car bomb in Baghdad.

Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, still going string at 90, is the mother of another distinguished cellist, Raphael Wallfisch, both members of a large family of very fine musicians.

When I see a title like "Salvation through music " I think of folks like me who tend to be loners who are able to break out of their shells by playing with other musicians.

Salvation comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, I expect; and music brings about a grand share of it. The friends I have made, and the funks I have overcome just because there is music in my life, are beyond count.
