22 Feb 16 - 06:58 PM (#3774390) Subject: 'Hamish' at Glasgow Film Festival From: Gallus Moll Looking forward to seeing '"Hamish" by Robbie Fraser at GFT tomorrow evening - the opening has Adam MacNaughtan and Siobhan Miller singing some of Hamish Henderson's songs before the documentary film begins. It is being shown again tomorrow afternoon (without the live music beforehand!) and later it goes on tour. I am disappointed to have missed the Barrowland opening night of Aidan Moffat's "Where You're Meant To Be" featuring Sheila Stewart; it is being shown again on Wednesday afternoon, with a Q&A session afterwards. This film also goes on tour round Scotland- I'm planning to catch it in Oban or Edinburgh. |

I had a huge smile on my face for most of it, interspersed with some tears -- and wow, amazing spontaneous applause on several occasions during the film! And the singing- - Many weel kent faces recounting their memories of the man -- and they along with plenty others were in the audience! This is definitely a documentary I want to see again- - it will be touring Scotland, some of the smaller communities, after the film festival -- also some film festivals so might even make it to the Abroad. And it is going to appear on BBC Alba in the Autumn? There were advance articles about the film in The Herald, Sunday Herald and The National during the last few days -- probably other papers too. I have no idea how to do clicky links- - - - hope someone else can! NB Al Whittle -- there was a book/ sorta biography about the other Hamish a number of years ago which I expect you could track down |

Perhaps it could be shown at the next Carrying Stream Festival (in honour of Hamish) at Edinburgh's Filmhouse: they have had similar showings of iconic folk history films there before. As for Hamish Imlach: I have a copy of the book - "Cod Liver Oil and The Orange Juice - Reminiscences of a Fat Folk Singer" - which is by Hamish himself and Ewan McVicar - ISBN No: 1-85158-512-5 |

I felt there could have been more about Hamish's legendary 'flyting' with Hugh MacDiarmid - that was sort of skimmed over, and to me that ideological dispute is a very interesting part of the whole story (but maybe not to everybody) - but otherwise it was very enjoyable. Moving too. Regarding screening in England, I recommended it to a friend who works at a cinema in Bristol who expressed an interest. Otherwise I think that BBC Alba (where it'll apparently be screened in the autumn) should be available in England, on iPlayer or something like that. |

However at the Q&A after the premiere I think they mentioned film festivals too -- so worth keeping your eyes open? Sending in requests?! I missed the other premiered film which features Sheila Stewart: Where you're meant to be by Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap (a group apparently) However it too is going on tour so I shall book myself a ticket for March / April. All the reports I've hear of both films have been great. I certainly enjoyed Hamish |

Very emotionally charged, as it focuses on the relationship between Aidan Moffat and Sheila Stewart, who (as many will know, but some might not) passed away after the footage was filmed... but it also contains moments of great humour. Aidan's language might be problematic for some - it's fairly... let's say Rabelaisian at points. |
