The soundtrack of my teenage years.   RIP.

I've just got his wonderful ensemble version of Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood out of the library (it's in the attic too, but the attic…shudder). He gatheered together an orchestra (not sure which), Jonathan Price, Anthony Hopkins, Mark Knopfler, Bonny Tyler, Geraint Evans, Tom Jones, Mary Hopkin, the London Welsh Male Voice Choir, etc, etc to make a stunning version of the radio play.

A large influence on popular culture, one of the few "behind the scenes" that became a household name.

A clever and talented man. Good innings.

Radio Wales and BBC Breakfast reported that Sir George Martin had died at the age of 90. He recorded many artists, particularly Flanders and Swann, but it was the magic combination of George's producing and four loveable moptop rock-and-roll musicians that put me the on The Road To Damascus. Like thousands of other teenagers, I just had to have a guitar, and badgered my parents into buying me an acoustic one as a Christmas present. Lots of influences inspired me - John Singleton of Goodmayes Methodist Youth Club, Bunjies cellar club and Fairport Convention amongst them - and the music has taken me to Hong Kong, New Zealand, America and many European countries, and I have learned to love and appreciate the vast riches of Welsh, Celtic and English folk traditions. I'm a founder of Llantrisant Folk Club, the best community there is, and we are celebrating our 35-year run.

And all because of Sir George Martin and The Beatles...

The first band that George produced after The Beatles split up was "Seatrain"( 1971)
A band filled with "super" folkies: Pete Rowan, Richard Greene etc.

Seatrain meets George

Not heard of that Under Milk Wood production. Thanks. Will have to try our library (before it gets threatened move to the swimming pool here!)

And I remember Seatrain, and its hit single, "Thirteen Questions." Had no idea that George Martin was behind that one.

What a huge loss, his contributions go far beyond just the Beatles (which was enormous) but his work as the owner of Air Studios was very significant. He built Air London in an old church and kept the pipe organ and choir loft intact. I heard that the last service in that church was conducted by Mick Jagger's father, now there is a vibe.

He produced a series for the BBC called "The Rythmn of Life" I think, well worth watching.

The heavenly choir now has a recording genius and producer to guide them on their way.

Bob.

A sad loss indeed! I do hope the BBC re-issue the series Bob Hitchcock mentioned above - a fascinating study of music, in three parts (melody, harmony, rhythm) - I remember being spellbound when I saw GM interviewing an American musicologist who had recorded trees drawing up water and then amplified the sounds, creating a brilliant rhythm you could dance to.... the Rhythm of Life

Dean of Rochester, I remember that part very well. He slowed down the recording and then had a percussionist play along with the track, it was truly amazing.

The tree rhythm from 'The Rhythm of Life' that Dean and Bob mention, can be seen towards the end of this clip:

In a rather tongue in cheek tweet, there's one doing the rounds of a photo of Jimmy Shand in a kilt sat with his accordion staring sternly at the camera. The caption being that Mr Martin produced his albums too....

He was brilliant. Another brilliant man died a few days earlier, Nikolaus Harnoncourt. His projects and performances in classical music never acquiesced in received wisdom, and he was totally against the cult of the terrorist-conductor as personified by Karajan and Szell.
