I'll be optimistic and trust the mudcat techs were busily doing maintenance work...??? 😎 Same kind of scare happened this weekend to my favourite guitar forum which I've followed since 1999, except the service note on the blank page looked kind of terminal, like unpaid bills or something worse. Fortunately it was back again today, in better shape than it's been for weeks... Gotta have faith in the webmaster with the keyboard and screwdrivers... |

This morning etta still wasn't working - unreachable this time - but mudcat.org got me the awe server. awe had been working throughout. etta started working again sometime this afternoon. I did wonder yesterday whether anyone in the US knew that etta had failed. As this thread title suggests, it's soon became evident that half the users were missing. |

But I had a terrible time logging in, same problem Saturday. Finally resorted to posting as a guest on music threads. Then, Sunday, the timing-out started when I tried to post to threads. Okay, maybe my experience was like everybody else's....curious. |

Using my Win 8.1 PC, Mudcat would either not open at all despite "isitdownrightnow.com" stating it was online, or on the rare occasion it did open it would not let me Preview, or Post... Several times I flushed Chrome cookies and browsing data, and even rebooted my router & PC; and that seemed to open Mudcat, but as soon as I logged in, it stopped working again...??? However, at various times when my PC would not connect, I could access Mudcat using Android devices - but I can't remember if I logged in or not, probably not due to Android security issues on old Tablets...??? If I was a paranoid kind of bloke who believed in conspiracy theories, I might even have started thinking my PC was being targeted and blocked...!!!??? 😱 |

When you call mudcat.org you will get one of them - if you look next to the Mudcat Cafe image at the top it will say which one you're using. It's called 'load balancing' - the website load is balanced between these two servers. You shouldn't need to know about it. How the system determines which you get I don't know. It could be based on your location, or IP address, or something else. Last week in France I was sometimes getting one, sometimes the other. This might be because different hotels had different IP addresses, but I don't actually know. You can connect to a particular server - eg by using awe.mudcat.org - that's how I know that it was working yesterday. This is not generally a good idea, but might get you in sometimes. (And my add-on won't work if you do.) Services like 'is this site down' won't always give useful information. etta was maybe 'up' yesterday (pingable), but not responding. This morning it was 'down' (unreachable). |

Like jugglers in a three ring circus the "elves" and "clones" keep the Mudcat moving.. On major-extended USA holidays...many of the MC "magicians and servants" elect to be with their family and friends. New Years, Passover/Easter, Memorial, Veterans, Christmas/Hanaka are also traditional times for hackers/exploaters to attempt attacks on a system. In the past few years I believe Max moved over to "Go Daddy." The system has been increasingly stable. And it has allowed him a "real life." For example, the thread on the "Easter Rising" has over 1100 posts. After 12 hours, my thread on the interesting tune called "Dance of the Demon Daffodils" has 3 posts and is unlikely to have any more. Yet the Mudcat is supposed to be about music. I've donated money to the Mudcat. I wonder how many of those on contentious BS threads have ever donated. Not all BS threads are contentious, but I think that even positive threads, such as "Janie's Rainbow" should be stopped and made to start over after a while. Who's going to read hundreds of posts? And why should electricity and memory be given over to preserving them? I think BS threads should be stopped at 256 posts. Why? Because 256 is 16 times 16. It's real binary. |

I never really knew what it meant until reading this thread but I notice it sometimes when I refresh the website. I also wonder whether the time when I am likely to access Mudcat, i.e. 4 or 5 in the morning here in east coast Oz, is actually "peak hour" across the pond and that might be why I have trouble sometimes getting into the site.
