FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000

08 Dec 99 - 02:16 PM (#146652)
Subject: FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000
From: Charlie Baum

The date: the weekend of October 20-22, 2000.

The place: Camp Ramblewood, near Darlington, Maryland, on the banks of the Susquehanna River. It's about an hour-an-a-half North of Washington, DC. If you're flying in , the nearest airports are actually Baltimore and Philadelphia. The place is not too far away from beatiful downtown Mudcatville (Max's place, in real life, where the server for Mudcat resides physically). For those who need to fly in, Baltimore has lots of cheap inexpensive flights!

Mark your calendars now.

Print out the registration form . It's in the .pdf format, which means it's readable using Adobe Acrobat Reader, a free program obtainable here if you don't have it already. You can print it out on your printer--just set your page setup to "fit to page". Fill out the form, write out a check for the appropriate amount, and send it to: FSGW Getaway c/o J. GETAWAY!

36th Annual

Friday, October 20, 2000 through Monday, October 23, 2000

Camp Ramblewood, Darlington, MD (near Havre de Grace)

What is the Getaway?

For nearly 36 years, FSGW has held its Getaway weekend as a way for members and friends to share music, stories, crafts and dance in a relaxing camp setting.

The Getaway is:

  • music-making under the trees, on the lawn, by the pond
  • group singing and jamming at its best
  • informal workshops on singing, dancing, crafts and storytelling led by FSGW members and friends
  • trying your hand at a craft—quilting, basket-making, puppets, and mask-making have been highlights of past years
  • great food
  • a terrific weekend for the whole family, with lots of special activities planned for the kids.
  • a chance to renew old friendships and make new ones
  • a beautiful camp with modern facilities in scenic rolling hills adjacent to the Susquehanna River
  • a wonderful chance for parents to introduce their kids to the magic of group singing and dancing—or to discover that magic for the first time themselves.
  • Dates and Times

This year's Getaway is a little later that last year's (Columbus Day is also Yom Kippur). Our new site, Camp Ramblewood spreads out over rolling hillsides bordering the Susquehanna River just below the Conowingo Dam, north of Havre de Grace Maryland. Camp Ramblewood is about 8 miles north of Exits 88 (Havre de Grace) or 93 (Port Deposit) of I-95. It's only 11/4 hours North of the I-495 Beltway, in a direction far less subject to traffic jams than Virginia. You may choose to stay over either two or three nights, or you may come for the day if you are unable to get away for the whole weekend. Daytrippers are offered two meals, lunch & dinner each day. (But you must register in advance if you wish to dine!)

The weekend starts on Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three wonderful meals and a midnight snack each day on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning.

    Facilities

The dining hall, several common rooms, the pub, the drama barn, the dance barn (with a hardwood sprung floor), and the outdoor pavilion offer all-weather spaces for music making and dancing. NO SMOKING is allowed in any of the buildings in the camp.

If you choose to go to bed, there are more than 50 rooms, mostly in modern cabins. They feature indoor flush plumbing and hot showers; real comfortable beds with box-spring matresses (bring your own linens and bedding). There are handicapped-accessible cabins with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for those who need them; please indicate any special needs when you register. Cabins are not heated (bring warm clothes!). If you prefer to bring a tent or your own RV, you may do so, and camp on the grounds (no discounts, but you get guaranteed privacy!). If you don't want to sing, there's a pond with boats (and stocked with fish), tennis courts, ball fields, and a short walk through the woods to the banks of the rolling Susquehanna. The immediate area offers antiques, history and horse farms. (See more of Camp Ramblewood at their website).

    Kitchen Help

New this year—you won't need to help in the kitchen at all! You can spend those two hours making more music.

    Special Guests

Hmmm. The dates are good, although the weather could get darn cold by then. It'll give me time to do laundry after my September trip to Germany, and it's after leaf-peeper season so I can wander the east after the Getaway without worrying about finding lodging. Hold a space for me, Charlie. I can hardly wait.

Hey Joe, it COULD get cold, but it could just as easily be 75 degrees in late October (at least if THIS fall is any indication). There may even be a few leaves left to peep at. Glad you, Vixen, and Tim liked us all well enough to come back! Kath

Even this far off I can say barring disaster I'll be making the trek again, in a second, well maybe 8-9 hrs. Thanks Charlie, I think that's gotta be at least 2 hrs shorter than the last year, though it wouldn't matter if it was 10 hrs longer. Barry

    Answers to questions:

Barry and Suan of DT--It's a lot closer to New York, New Jersey, and New England than the old venues.

JeffP--Day-trippers will be most welcome; you can come for the day and don't need to camp.

Joe Offer--It will be the PEAK of fall foliage in that part of the country on that weekend.

Everyone else--while we've set the date and the place, we still need to set the menu for the food, and then determine prices, so no registration just yet. But believe you me--we'll make sure you all know when registration forms are available. Hell, the local members of the FSGW who aren't mudcatters haven't even heard about the dates yet! You heard it first here on Mudcat!

    Dani,

Either you are quite the sleepy head or you are not completely addicted. After showering and dressing, but before heading off to work, it is nearly imperative that I check the Mudcat. So, I have to be at work at 7:30 AM, I have a 45 - 60 minute commute, and I prefer to be awake when I drive. Hence, the alarm rings at 5:00 AM. Good thing old folks tend to get up early, right 'Spaw?

I could not possibly get up early enough to check in BEFORE getting my family off to work and school. Once things quiet down a bit I can find a minute before I'M off to work. Sometimes before sleep. Sometimes a quicky in the afternoon. Whatever...

We all get it however we can though, huh? Sometimes I'll get busy and go a couple of DAYS without. That's tough...

Hi Mick, it'll be great to see you again. I'm just wondering though if you'll be do any singing this time around or are you gonna just talk your way through the weekend again, well maybe you could manage a few songs inbetween the sneezes & the snivils. If you come feeling a bit under the weather again I'll just have to mix up a old seceret family remedy (would've brought it last time but I didn't know you'd be feeling low). It's a poultice to pack on your chest, makes you sing like an angel no matter what, you could play that whistle of yours through your nose & it'd sound like Gabriel playing his horn, oh, one draw back you'd smell like goat sh&%$#@it for the weekend. Yours in playful song. Barry

And Barry, bring the poultice.....Mick has a theory that smelling like a guy who's been et by a bear and shit over a cliff is appealing to the opposite sex and as he is director of Fertility Rites, I hesitate to argue.

    Answers--

It's not clear yet that Debby McClatchy won't be doing at least some of the cooking. The camp will permit us to bring in a chef, provided she works with the regular staff. But whether she cooks or not, we've already decided to invite her as a guest!

Oh, another thing--about kids--since some people who hadn't been before didn't know last year--CHILDREN ARE VERY WELCOME, and there's lots of activities for them, so there's no need to park them with grandma or find a babysitter for the weekend. Drag Bring 'em along.

And since this new place has dance floors to die for (sprung hardwood floors!), we'd like to try to have at least some dancing as part of the weekend schedule.

I cooked dinner for harpgirl and son tonight (jeesh! I wish I lost weight as good as I cook!) and I think I've convinced her that sharing driving expenses and driving duties is better than me going it alone (and walking with a cane I am now). Since our first night will be spent in Rocky Mount with my flatpicker cousin and his fiddlin' wife, we could pick up Dani on the way! Charlie ... have you decided on fees, yet, or must we wait!

Mick ... I'll bring my grandfather's terpin hydrate cough medicine next year, which will cure ANYTHING that ails you. Makes me shivver to think of it.

Hi Moonchild, hope you're bringing along a few new Irish songs with you, eh? Well I hope you can convince harpgirl into coming, it's hard to explain what a great time was had by all & while you're convincing her & getting Dani (that's a push as well as a hint Dani, hope you make it again) you might as well convince your cousin & his wife too, make it a full house. If not sooner see you then, Barry

Fees have not yet been determined. I'd guess that for an adult for the whole weekend, they'll be more than $110 and less than $150. We'll have them figured out more precisely by February or March. When we know what the fees are, you'll hear it here first!

And Sunday all day??? And I promise not to do more than about a 15 minute intro of my song for the "Music of the Mudcat" workshop next year.

Anna P., if our gal from Oz makes it out to your place, I will make the meal, or at least some of my specialties. Wouldn't that be a hoot??? New Jersey at the end of September and the Getaway three weeks later. Damn, so much good music.......food.............and THE FAIR ONE...........Mick

Bet on it, Moonchild. I'll take over the driving when you get here. Maybe we could rent a big ol' van and do it up in style. The Waffle House tour of the coast!!

Just among friends... I'm SO frustrated getting started on my banjo that I'm thinking of coming around to the guitar. Maybe by October I'll be able to accompany myself on a tune or two. Any requests? I'm a blank slate.

    Dani

PS - I am an eyewitness. I was staggering to bed when I found y'all in the dining hall that Saturday night. Barry, Mick was indeed singing. And though I enjoyed every bit of your own singing as well, I'll have to give HIM the medal for at least LOOKING awake. Only his eyes gave him away. You were a part of the upholstery on that throne there.

Nice idea Dani, but it's 81, not 86...and you'd probably do just as well to use US29 instead to get to C'ville, home of Allan C. As time draws nearer, I can come up with suggestions on how to avoid the immediate Washington DC area (e.g., I-81 to Hagerstown, MD, I-70 to Baltimore, I-695 clockwise around Baltimore)

Barry ... the Irish is going very well, since I've discovered Mary Black! Specifically, I'm working on "Song For Ireland" and "Fare Thee Well My Own True Love." There's a lovely song called "Mo Ghile Mear" and I'd love to learn it, but my prowess in the romance languages has not prepared me for gaelic.

Dani ... That sounds great! I drive a Ford Tempo, which actually seats 3-4 pretty comfortably, however, a van sounds even better. Gosh ... we could even pick up one or two more m'catters on the way. Anyone interested? Let's talk!

Alison--it was a few years ago that Gordon Bok (of Maine) sailed into the Getaway in his boat. Of course, back then, we were at Camp Letts, which had its own docking facilities (on a river off Chesapeake Bay). And I suspect it would be easier if you could sail from Syndey, NS instead of Syndey, NSW.

I like the sound of this place:
"Ramblewood has been catering to the needs of "alternative" groups for over a decade, and is experienced in and capable of providing an environment for unencumbered self-expression."
Sounds like we can shed our inhibitions (and possibly our clothing) and drink wild potions and cavort hedonistically.

The committee that plans the Getaway has just been reconstituted and reauthorized for 2000, so we're about to plan for cost and food. Decisions should be ready and ratified by early May. (Ratification is what takes time in any organization.) In the meantime, note my guesstimate last December (above) of between $110 and $150 per person for the whole weekend. Subject to revision. Less for children. Discounts for FSGW members. Your mileage may vary.

p.s. While Ramblewood Camp might not require clothing, October weather in Maryland usually recommends it.

I saw Charlie last night, and the cost of the weekend is still being calculated. Once that's done, a registration form will be generated and registration will open up. My guess is that the form will come to FSGW members in their August newsletter. It will probably be posted on the Folklore Society website at the same time. (www.fsgw.org).

As most of you remember, we'll be at a new camp about 1-1/2 hours north of D.C. this year. Charlie and his committee are figuring out a pricing structure that will 1) assure that the Folklore Society meets its direct costs for the camp; AND 2) encourage people with families to bring their kids so that we can assure that the music is passed along to the young 'uns. His guess last night was that the FSGW member rate will be something between $125-$150 for an adult for the three-day weekend. Nonmember cost will be higher, but we don't know by how much. Kids will be less.

I'm sure Charlie will post details as soon as they're available.

The good news is that everything has been figured out, and the details are about to be published in the FSGW monthly bulletin. The bad news is that the webmaster of the FSGW website is off at Folk Music camp this week, and won't be back until next weekend. Hence, we're going to have to wait until next week to mount the information. If you go to the FSGW Gewtaway Webpage, you'll find what's available, but the prices and some details won't be put on line until the first days of August. The same link will then give you all youi need to know. This page will give you details on joining the FSGW, and a membership application may be downloaded by clicking here.
