".... As the first episode of TG4's excellent new series Scéalta Átha Cliath laid it out, fascinatingly and highly entertainingly, Molly was about as real as Sherlock Holmes or Robin Hood, and with even less of a tenuous connection to reality than either of them. ..."

(the link above lost some text, I think this one works)

We've discussed this on another thread.

Her statue in Dublin is realer than she was.

There was no real Molly. Dublineers were not best pleased with the Floozie statue never being ones to waste money on art without reason i,e Martyrs fine art no! But the artist being aware of this set out to try identify a real Molly but only came up,with a few vaculy similar sounding names. However he weaved a good enough story about one of these being a poor put upon lady of the night with a suitable sob story, and Dubliners bought it hook line and sinker, so she's real enough in our Irish kind of reality

The linked article asks "So where did this notion that Molly Malone belongs to Dublin — and might even have been a real fishmonger from Fishamble Street — come from?" and offers the answer "Where many questionable things come from: the minds of people who work in marketing." Marketing may be responsible for the notion that Molly was a real person, but the Dublin connection is in the song's first line, presumably put there by the songwriter (apparently one James Yorkston).

"... the Floozie statue ..."

Hang on! Surely the Floozie was the one in the jacuzzi in O'Connell Street, and Molly is the tart with the cart.

The ' Floozie in the Jacuzzi ' aka the whore in the sewer is Anna Livia, the spirit of Dublin.
