25 Sep 16 - 07:40 AM (#3811227) Subject: Obit: Ernie Sissons Kiveton Park Folk Club From: GUEST,andy It is with no small measure of sadness that I have to report the passing of a great bloke, Ernie Sissons, founder member of Kiveton Park Folk Club. Ernie passed away in a New Forest nursing home on 4th September aged 85 years. He will no doubt be remembered fondly by many folkies around Sheffield, Worksop and the South Yorkshire and North Notts areas. There must still be many who remember him from the Lord Conyers pub in Wales Square, Kiveton where the club started in 1970. It became, under his guidance and enthusiasm, one of the most popular South Yorkshire folk venues and featured many of the top-line artists of the day along with rousing singers nights also. The club is, incidentally, still running 46 years later, although at a different venue. Ernie was a man of great wit and warmth who had a charisma which endeared him to all he met. He was an accomplished MC, singer and musician, having taught himself to play the accordion quite late in life and his stage presence was impressive. His other folk accomplishment was to be an original member of Lord Conyers Morris side who toured extensively at home and occasionally abroad and he was their musician for a number of years. So, farewell to this lovely guy, a personal friend of myself and many more. It was great knowing you Ernie. Condolences to his widow Mary and the family. There will be a celebration of Ernie's life on 28th October in Kiveton with dancing, singing and a display by Lord Conyers Morris. I knew Ernie well back in the day, when we used to come over from Worksop on a Tuesday night to The Lord Conyers. My teenage introduction to folk clubs featured Ernie, together with Wellsie, Andy, Dave. Mick & Mick and all good friends in Kiveton. Mitch and I have fond memories of getting the train up, missing the last one back and walking back to Worksop down the canal towpath!! A bit of a distance now, but I have pencilled in the date Andy and will try to get over. Ian |

What a lovely bloke he was and drove the club forward with his co-founders Jack, Mick and Johnny Wells. Liked a pint or two and a good laugh also. This chap was a real gent and will be sorely missed. A lovely man, full of humour and good naturedness. His singing and playing were extremely entertaining. His playing for the morris is certainly worthy of mention and I have fond memories of his participation in mummers plays at Christmas time. Ernie will be remembered. John Rankin |

Everything he did was done with enthusiasm, wit and his own inimitable style. He, with Wellsy, Mick and Jack ran the best Folk Club in the '70s, he was a founder member of the Lord Conyers Morrismen, musician, 'Mummer', MC AND Friend. And his 'snuff taking' (tobacco type!) days were worthy of any 'sitcom' series !!! "What's the life of a man ....." In Ernies case - - -A Hell Of A Lot. This is to take place at Wales Jubilee Club on Friday 28th October, commencing 7:00. There will be song, music and dance and a display (or two?) by Lord Conyers Morris Men. Let's say farewell to this much loved and respected character in good style. All old mates of Ernie's will be made most welcome and I'm sure his widow Mary will be overjoyed to see a few faces from the past.
