Penelope Keiths Hidden Villages - S03E03 - Channel 4 / More4

Featured amongst other delights Goathland performing in full costume in the pouring rain. Well the musicians were in the local bus shelter!! Finished with a sword lock around Keith's neck.

Apparently they only go out about 10 times a year. Great to see a real ancient tradition on the box - but thousands of years' old???!!!

Can be viewed in 4OD (4 on demand) for the next 21 days or so.

If overseas you might be able to view it with a UK VPN. Or it might eventually get uploaded to YouTube or as a torrent - try MVGroup.org

Yes saw it on tv ~ has one or two well known folkies and one or two who are imports from the likes of Spen valley sword team ~ Wendy Price on melodeon in bus shelter (now lives in Whitby) rumoured Eliza Carthy plays for them on occasion!

Saw Eliza with them at Bampton this year.

Picked out two people from outside North Yorkshire without even paying attention. Can they field a fully local side?

We are talking Morris I presume, not the Goathland Square 8 that ceilidhnauts would know.

Good programme overall I thought. Funnily enough we passed through Goathland a couple of weeks back and I was thinking about the Plough Stots.

Mr Red Goathland Plough Stots are a longsword team one of the very few traditional teams left in the country. At the SDU longsword tournament held in the village last week end they did field a side made up of village lads but in the main they dance out with a mixture of locals and adoptees. I was adopted by them some 10 years ago, I don't dance but play the mouthie for them. They also field a ladies side now.
A canny seta lads and lasses.

Thanks for the info - I managed to get it on catch-up yesterday. I thought I caught a brief glimpse of Jim Eldon playing fiddle for the Plough Stots.....?

It's interesting that we consider Goathland Plough Stots to be a traditional team when they were revived in 1922 after a lapse of 40 years. Is continuity important or not?
