First day of retirement from my primary job. I awoke at daybreak in a panic, thinking I had overslept and was going to be late for work.

As someone who's been retired for a while: find something to get involved with that isn't necessarily perfect. Dealing with what you love brings joy, but dealing with problems is absolutely required.
...and do all the stuff you put on the shelf in order to survive.
...and find a poem called "Sometimes an Old God" by Tom Hirons and read it.

Happy Retirement!

I still have my private practice, Jeri, and have expanded it. I'll still be working 20-30 hours per week, but that is much better than the 50-60 hours I had been working. Plus, I will no longer have to be as much bureaucrat as clinician.

The challenge now will be to try to consolidate my schedule into 3-4 days a week so I have at least 3 consecutive days each week without clients, to allow more time for personal interests and to get up to WV and Maryland more often see my Mom and sister. And maybe even an occasional trip to the beach!

For most of us all that stuff about how traumatic it is to retire is just nonsense, a way to keep you working. Pretty well whatever you did before retiring, you can find some way to keep doing the bits you liked, if you want, and cut out the stuff you didn't.

The first ten seconds are the worst (as you've discovered). The last ten seconds aren't all that wonderful either.

Good on ya. Don't make any decisions on spare time for a while. Just "find out" what you enjoy doing.

"The Geezettes" sounds like a chorus line.

"WADDYA HERE FOR? (Explosions and fireworks and the voice says) IT's JANIE AND THE GEEZERETTES!" (Loud drums and guitars and various laser effects)

Yeah, I can see that on the marquee: "Janie and the Geezerettes."

Is that a doo-wop group?

Congratulations on retiring, Janie!

Talking of Rockette chorus lines, Janie: how is your leg?

Better than it was. Appears I will not likely ever be able to go off trail again in my beloved Appalachian mountains in search of ginseng or tackle really steep or rough trails, and I can't run or trot. Sorta fast walk is the best I can manage on a sidewalk. But my sis bought me a new pair of hiking shoes and an adjustable hiking pole for my retirement and birthday. We took a bit of a hike on a well maintained trail with some inclines while at Mom's for Thanksgiving to try them out, and I did better than I had hoped. I have never used a hiking pole before. Gonna be a good tool. I think I will order one for the other hand. With 2 poles and now that I have more time, getting out and walking/strengthening more, I think I can get more function back than the doctor or PT think I can.

Thanks for asking.

I have a pair of Nordic walking poles. I have a bad knee and can walk farther and faster with them. Even though I have a cane which was adjusted for my height (or lack thereof) I walk with more upright posture with the poles. I suspect that you are correct about getting more function back.

Janie, I wish you the greatest most heart-lifting adventures as you venture into the wind-blown shallows of Geezerdom. I am glad I shall be able to share some of them with you, as soon as the offers come in here.

Amos! Such poetry!
'The windblown shallows of Geezerdom.'
I shall try to remember that every time that I feel that I'm drowning.

Janie, if you have a moment nowadays to catch up on reading:
before you started this thread, posts were exchanged about Stephen Donaldson's fantasy series with the title character Thomas Covenant.
You stated that as those final four books came out, you started the first one and kind of stalled out. I can understand why, seeing as that is the first book in the series from which Thomas Covenant is absent.
If the first six books, as you have said elsewhere, were worthwhile reads for you, then you have a couple of options, now that the series is concluded.

You could go back where you left off and try again.

Or you could crack open one of the last three books and see what's in there.
Because the ongoing series took so long to write and publish, the later books in the series have detailed "What Has Gone Before" prologues to refresh your memory about the opening six volumes and all.

My personal suggestion, take it or leave it, is:
if you don't want to pick up "The Runes of the Earth" (book seven) again and resume where you left off,
then try "Against All Things Ending" (2010, Putnam). It's book nine. When the book (not the prologue) opens, Linden Avery and Thomas Covenant have just been reunited, after a lengthy separation, in "the Land" as opposed to waking-reality Earth where Covenant had been killed. Covenant is present but rather out of it as he has just been pulled out of a sort of timeless dimension, so he has to pull himself together and remember who he is and what is going on. It's an interesting narrative choice, because in his thinking Covenant has to recapitulate and recall; and you can see plot lines being neatly woven together and loose ends tied up.

Regardless, the conclusion is a satisfying one (book ten) -- I strongly recommend that you look at the series' conclusion sooner or later.
(My local library branches have these last books in circulation, don't know how the libraries are your way.) By all means, enjoy.

Amos says: I am glad I shall be able to share some of them with you, as soon as the offers come in here.

Well, the Offer is still in California, which is why Amos is able to flirt with Janie while Joe is not.

But I'll get my chance....

Best order a pair. That way you will always have one when the other(s) become stranded in some distant lodge. It will happen.
Mind you, I know one person who has acquired quite a few poles that way.

And they do get dirt in the expanding bits and lock in position, so they are somewhat expendable.

Talking of walking, it can be very easy, once retired, to lounge around or - in my case - sit around playing instruments all day. (Even though the day job went nearly 8 years ago, the evening music job still carries on unabated).

So one of the best things I've done over the last 2 years was to buy a very nice Canon DSLR camera (to be used in preference to my Fuji compact) and a light but sturdy pair of walking boots. So, whenever the opportunity comes up, I'm out and about with the camera, and in the boots, walking the streets, fields, footpaths and lanes in and around my village. I've been photographing and documenting my village for over 30 years, so this seemed like a good way of getting some excellent photos and some excellent exercise at the same time. Then comes the opportunity to process the "raw" files using Adobe's 'Lightroom' software - which enhances the photographs and helps to compensate for overly heavy light contrasts and stuff like parallax. So - food for the brain as well.

Not dissimilar to walking poles - just a bit more techie!

Thanks, Mr. Red and Will Fly. Good advice from both of you, as I am learning.

Aside from being thrilled that Amos and crew have moved here, has been some very good motivation to get me off my duff the past few days to help them get unpacked. Gonna need to find some internal motivation to not spend too much time on the couch watching Netflix or on the computer.
